no we never have as dd is too young for it. I have heard of it though - mainly from people using it to help their dcs sleep on long haul flights.

elmofan · 23/02/2010 19:02

thanks for posting girlsyearapart , i have never given her an antihistamine before but she has an infection in her eczema ATM & just can not sleep with the itch , was up trying to settle her six times last night & in the end both dd & i only got 3 hours sleep its been 12 nights like this now , worn out , the hospital put this on her prescription but it has a long list of side effects , just wondered if anyone found it good or not before i give it to her soon iykwim .

foxinsocks · 23/02/2010 19:03

yes and I take it for mine too

it is a godsend as it's one of the only antihistamines that affords any sleep when my skin is truly itchy

foxinsocks · 23/02/2010 19:04

I would give it to her. I cannot explain to you how awful it is to be woken up with itchy skin. It is quite literally unbearable.

Just keep an eye on her - I know in some children it can have the opposite effect and make them a bit hyper but it's never done that with me (or dcs).

elmofan · 23/02/2010 19:05

oh foxinsocks , thank you , so do you think this will really work ? lost hope at this stage of ever getting a proper nights sleep .

OP posts:
foxinsocks · 23/02/2010 19:07

yes it should work. I don't know how long it will work for her (not sure what dose she's been given) but it should certainly give her a good stretch so she can get a rest.

What I also find when my eczema gets like this, is the less sleep I get, the worse my eczema gets so it becomes a vicious circle and it only starts improving when I get some rest, even if it's been helped along y the phenergan.

fyi, I hardly ever take it - don't think you'll be stuck on it. You can use it just to get over the very very itchy stage.

Poor poppet. I hope she gets over her infection and itchiness soon.

elmofan · 23/02/2010 19:08

i know foxinsocks as i also have Atopic eczema , i am flared up also ATM as i get upset to see dd in this state , the last 12 nights have been up applying aveeno creams to soothe out her itch but half an hour later she is hysterical again

foxinsocks · 23/02/2010 19:08

and poor you too!

foxinsocks · 23/02/2010 19:12

you must be tired

fingers crossed it works and you both get some sleep x

elmofan · 23/02/2010 19:13

yes the hospital has put her on antibiotic = erythroped sf , & I've to give her two 5mls spoonfuls of the phenergan . its a vicious circle isn't it , going to give it to her now & ill keep a close eye on her . thank you so much .

OP posts:
elmofan · 23/02/2010 20:06

wow poor thing was fast asleep within 10 mins of giving it to her . Although she is exhausted anyway . thanks x

OP posts:
girlsyearapart · 24/02/2010 16:23

how did you get on?

If we were prescribed it I wouldn't hesitate in giving it- dd2 has been on antinhistamines since approx 6m or even younger but is only 17m so can't get the strong stuff.

elmofan · 24/02/2010 17:18

hi girlsyearapart , gave dd it at 7.20pm last night & she was fast asleep by 7.30pm . she was exhausted anyway so i suppose that helped , she slept until 10.45pm woke up & called me once (normally she goes into a full blown tantrum at this stage) i went in to her & tucked her back in & she instantly nodded off again without any fuss then woke again at 3.20am & climbed into our bed for a cuddle & slept right through then until 7.45am this morning . so all in all a fantastic night for all of us. she is in a much better mood today so that's good .
your poor dd being on meds at such a young age , it says on the bottle that children can take this from the age of 2yrs .
has your dd got Atopic eczema too ?

OP posts:
girlsyearapart · 24/02/2010 18:52

that was a better night then

yes she has had it since she was about 8 weeks or even younger- all a bit of a blur now..

we had many many sleepless nights due to the itching so I totally sympathise with you. Now she has anti histamine when she has a reaction (allergic to lots of foods) or on a particularly itchy day.

dd1 hasn't got any allergies or excema so I'm holding out hope that dc3 due beg August will be like dd1 - skin wise at least

elmofan · 24/02/2010 19:08

ahhh poor little pet , its a horrible condition , funny isn't it , my ds (11yrs) doesn't have eczema at all but he does have mild asthma , please god your dc3 wont have it , congratulation by the way .

Poor you. We suffered this too for about 7 years. We just used to use Piriton at night as well as mitten pyjamas from Cotton comfort with tape around the outside to stop hands cutting in to skin at night and therefore starting infections... plus no heat at all in DS's room, all cotton everything, and the thinnest blanket/cotton duvet. After various different medicines and lots of attempts at gentler treatments, plus Great ormond st etc etc, we ended up trying an oral medicine (azothioprine) that we had eliminated years before as it seemed to not work, but got the dose right and DS is a different boy now at 8, with beautiful skin and no itching. We get there in the end I think but it's so much a matter of getting the right consultant if things get extreme and working through all the different pieces of advice until you get the one that is right for your child! Hope things get better. Hoping you all get some better sleep.

elmofan · 24/02/2010 19:52

thanks marl , wow great to hear your ds is clear now , poor dd is so good when it comes to me putting on her creams etc , but when she gets an infection in her skin then nothing seems to help & it breaks my heart to see her in so much discomfort , going to give the medicine to her now & hopefully she will have another good night tonight x

DS2 had terrible eczema and his skin was so sore, bleeding and cracked. I read something on the internet about urine therapy...
It was just as they were talking about using steroid creams on him and i didn't want to go down that route if I could help it, so I did some research.

So I tried some urine (His own) applied to his skin whenever i took a wet nappy off him, i would wipe it over his skin (we used terry nappies). and started to notice a difference within 3 days and it was gone within 2 weeks.

Try googling it - there's loads of different sites with info on it - but that was all I did, just apply his wet nappies - it's sterile. It's free and it worked for us.

elmofan · 24/02/2010 20:39

redonherhead my mum was advised years ago to try that urine therapy on me when i was little , but couldn't bring herself to actually do it , i will google it thanks and read up about it ,

morning elmo how was your night?

before you feel too sorry for me dd2 is sleeping a lot better now. In the last few months her body seems to have cleared up a lot so she usually sleeps 7-6 ish which is so fantastic.

face, hands and feet worst affected but I think she has sort of got used to the feeling iyswim and sleeps through it.

elmofan · 25/02/2010 11:49

morning girlyearapart not a bad night last night , dd woke up at 10pm , took a bit of a tantrum to get into our bed lol this lasted about 15 mins then she realised she was getting any where & gave up & let me tuck her back into her own bed , then slept right through until 5.30am , let her climb in beside us then for a cuddle , fell back to sleep until 7am , then got them up for school , again she hasn't been scratching for the last two days now so her skin is really improving the combination of the antibiotics & antihistamine seems to be really helping .
oh girls , that is a very hopeful sign that your dd2 might grow out of her eczema, fingers crossed .
