soya yoghurt

Aaaarggh! Getting really frustrated with the lack of suitable products at our local supermarket for my egg and CMP allergic DD. The allegedly "free from" aisle seems to be made up of cakes for adults with coeliac disease. Another supermarket (a bit of a drive away) is much better and has Pure soft cheese and cheddar-style slices, but I'm struggling with yoghurt.

We saw the dietician last week about my DD, and she was really impressing on us the importance of giving her calcium-fortified soya products. The problem is that while every supermarket stocks soya yoghurts, they are either flavoured (hence chock-full of sugar) or organic plain. And, of course, the organic stuff isn't calcium-enriched. Try as I might, I'm seriously struggling to find somewhere that stocks non-organic plain yoghurt. I really much prefer to give her plain yoghurt, and sometimes add in my own fruit.

I'm not at my wits' end quite yet, as I'm still breastfeeding so I know she's getting her calcium requirements from that, but at some point that's going to stop. Has anyone found suitable stuff anywhere?

Nope, I never found any for my ds.

How old is your dd, and how often are you feeding?

Is stirring some calcium supplement into plain stuff a possibility? I tried sneaking the calcium stuff into all sorts of food/drinks for ds, but unfortunately he could taste if even if there was 5mls in a 200ml drink!

Tbh, I didn't worry too much about the calcium until my milk disappeared around 18 weeks into my pregnancy. I am due in 4wks, so am happy that he will be getting loads once the milk comes in again. He is slowly outgrowing his intolerence, so hopefully the breastmilk will tide him over until he is able to take decent amounts of cows' stuff. His egg allergy is on it's way out too, so there's light at the end of the tunnel.

I know exactly what you mean about the "free from" aisle. Plenty stuff with no dairy, but it's all got egg in it instead! Very frustrating.

Thanks, mawbroon. She's 10 months. I work 4 days a week, and on those days I feed her twice and she drinks a variable (but always minute) amount of EBM from a cup. When I'm not at work she feeds 3 times a day.

I haven't actually seen a calcium supplement for kids, but that's a good idea. Is it calcium alone? And can you buy it over the counter?

We got ours prescribed by the dietician. You probably can buy it over the counter, but you might as well try to get it free on prescription

I've given up on it tbh because it was impossible to get ds to take it! The dietician only had him on half dose anyway, and we only got it a few weeks ago, so it's not too long a period for him to be going without the supplement.

Some interesting stuff on here

We can't give egg, diary, or soya to my LO and I had the same concerns about him getting enough calcium. Dietitian prescrived Calcium Sandoz which he takes happily as it is sweet.

Must say, I gave up and let DD had the sweetened stuff although in our case the pressure was on as she chose to stop BF and wouldn't take milk in any other form. I kind of rationalised it on the basis that many of the dairy child yogurts are sweetened anyway - not ideal, but in the scheme of things, not the end of the world.
