What foods cased this reaction in your BF babies?

DD2 definitely has some intolerances and we're trying to work out what they are at the moment. HV is very reluctant for me to start messing too much with my diet and prefers the wait-it-out approach. I've been off dairy since Christmas and we saw some improvement in her.

She has reflux and is on ranitidine, but does tend to spit it out. However, it does seem to help her too. We've had more calm moments with her since she started it a week ago. However, there is something which is setting her gut off. She produces loads and loads of wind which builds over 24 hours and leaves her in excruciating pain. I spent most of yesterday with her nappy off trying to get rid of it with tummy massage and leg movements and bathing her as she calms down for this. Her reflux worsens during these episodes. She doesn't sleep even though she's knackered. Something wakes her up within 15 minutes of falling asleep (usually 5 mins) and that is her up again for a while. She falls asleep at the breast so deeply that she doesn't burp, so when she does wake she is really windy and winding her upsets her even more and produces more reflux. Her nappies are expulsive and mucusy.

Her big sister was sensitive to gluten. I'm willing to try that again, but it is a big undertaking to be dairy and gluten free (not to mention expensive) so I wondered if anyone had had these symptoms in their LOs and narrowed it down to something else. I've tried a food diary, but I find it all so wooly that it's hard to interpret (e.g. I have gluten every day, but her episodes tend to be a day and a half after eating pasta, but then I have tomatoes and garlic at the same time so it could be them? But it may be something I ate since that too.) The other suspect might be nuts as I crave them for protein instead of dairy at the moment. But I have them every day and she tends to flare up for 24 hours, calm down gradually over the next 2 days and then be OK for a day or two.

I did have this with my second exactly the same with the reflux and wind and terrible weight gain (or lack thereof),and she also have rotton excema - she (6) is a coeliac now and her older sister (8) is too, but she suffered no symptoms when she was breastfed. I would like to say I worked it out but I didn't have a clue. She was delayed in development too and I think we were all more concerned about that so I cannot really offer you any help or advice but didn't want you to go unanswered. Perhaps approach Le Leche Legue and see if they can offer any advice. Just to say she is fine now, a bit speech delayed but completely normal in every way.

Best Wishes

thanks tarty. DD1 had weight gain issues, but DD2 is confounding me by piling on the pounds and following the 75th centile. But her gut is just so terrible. It must be from all the comfort feeding she does. DD1, thankfully, grew out of the gluten intolerance by the time she was 2. Your DDs must find it difficult with parties, lunches, etc.

Here's a link that might be useful; there are links in it to other articles too. It does sound like food-related problems.

Thanks for that. We have been referred to the children's hospital and are awaiting an appointment. I stopped gluten on Friday and she has has contented periods since then - a revelation - but her nappies still resemble caramel slime with dark bits in them, and she still has a bellyful of wind. Poor toot.
