Rice milk and Arsenic

Bloody hell!! Is nothing safe?

(apologies if this has been done before, DD2 drinks rice milk and her nursery manager told me about this when I dropped her off this morning)

yeah it was done a while ago,but no harm in refreshing IMO! a lot of people use it for littlies and it's a bit worrying isn't it?

GreenMonkies · 19/01/2010 18:25

Yes, it bloody is! DD2 has been drinking it (probably about a ¼-⅓ of a pint most days) for the last 2½ years!! Why is it still on sale if it's dangerous? Or is it not really dangerous? She can't tolerate soya either, so what the hell can I give her? I've got about half a dozen big cartons in the cupboard........

Oatly.

The arsenic quantity is only deemed unsafe for the under fives.

Or you could always try expressing

thisisyesterday · 19/01/2010 19:39

rice naturally contains arsenic. and in general it isn't enough to cause a problem.

but for a small child, using it as a main drink, it could be an issue.

there is no reason not to use up what you've got, but maybe just use one carton a week or something?
we use Oatly for ds2

GreenMonkies · 19/01/2010 19:57

Notanexcitingname You want me to start expressing again??? I only stopped 2 years ago, and recently gave away my pumps.... I don't think I could face pumping on that level again, ever!!

I might try her with Oatly, see if she likes it. Will it cause problems re; seperate cooking, as I have coeliac disease?

OP posts:

hmmm i'm not sure. i suppose it depends if the gluten remains after they make the "milk"

might say on the oatly website??

otehrwise holland and barratt sell things like almond milk?

Cokie · 19/01/2010 20:35

no way! DS has rice milk with his cerealeach day and a little bit to drink at nursery in the morning circle time. He can't have Oatly (oat intolerance) or soya and I guess he can't have almond as he has nut issues... Any other "milks" out there? All I can think of is coconut milk !!

Notanexcitingname · 19/01/2010 21:32

I was only teasing, green monkies. I know how much of a PITA expressing is, especially once your dc is over one. Trying to to feel gloomy about the thought of doing it for the foreseeable myself!

Oatly does contain gluten, I'm afraid it looks like you're a bit stuck. Aside from cooking, does she need to drink milk?

GreenMonkies · 19/01/2010 22:02

I know you were kidding but all the same the thought gave me cold sweat! I pumped for just over 18 months for her, it was a true labour of love, and not one I ever want to repeat!

She doesn't need to drink milk, but of course it's hard to make fish pie or custard without some kind of milk-like fluid, and she likes it, on cereal, or in a cup, or in (G&B) hot chocolate. Sadly nursery only do milk or water as drinks, no juice except for parties and special occasions. Otherwise I'd happily send her in with some cranberry juice to have at snack/lunch/tea time.

Oh bugger and tits and arse!

well
you could use oatly for her drinks, and then just use the rice milk in cooking

i honestly wouldn't be worried about using it for a small child, just not LOTS of it

GreenMonkies · 19/01/2010 22:55

I might try her with some oat milk and see if she likes it. It's just one more complication to life, as it's even harder to get hold of than rice milk!

you could prob order it online?

our local sainsburys, tesco and waitrose stock it

bridewolf · 19/01/2010 23:38

if its any consulation, i would advise not to use rice from america, as rice was a crop that replaced the cotton crops. arsenic was added to the cotton crop to increase production. so of course there is a higher rate of arsenic in their rice.

scamparoox2 · 21/01/2010 22:24

hi, my eldest(almost 3) has tried every milk and couldn't tolerate any. we now have neocate on percription. i use this for cooking, drinking everything really. i believe there is a toddler version of the formula and my dietitian also tells me we can get flavoured ones 2.
i am yet to see either but at moment i'm just happy i have something for him

CantSleepWontSleep · 21/01/2010 22:47

I'm surprised that you didn't know about this already GM. Oatly would be a good option for her to drink at nursery, and for cooking stuff like fish pie for you all then I'm sure the amount of rice milk involved wouldn't be a problem.

Are they both still bf btw? Mine are, but planning to stop dd on her 4th b'day next month, as I'm expecting no 3 in June and don't fancy tri-andem.

GreenMonkies · 22/01/2010 09:56

CantSleep No, I didn't know about it. The Nursery manager told me about it this week after an email was sent to her. I looked on the FSA site and this report came out ages ago. Why is this stuff never on the news or anything?

I'm going to try her with Oatly, and see if she likes it and maybe do a combination of the two.

We don't get any GP/Dietitian support at all. We diagnosed her CMPI ourselves after a friend (who's own children suffer the same) recognised the symptoms. I tried an exclusion diet, and it made a huge difference. I then tried a challenge (mmm, cheese!) and she reacted to it, so we were pretty sure that CMP was the problem. I reported all this to my HV who wrote "Lactose Intolerance" in her notes, and I then had to explain the difference between LI and CMPI to my own HV......

Perhaps if we'd been referred to a Paediatrition etc we would be getting this kind of support and information, but because she is breastfed and didn't need special formula we have basically been left to figure it out for ourselves.

And yes, both mine are nursing, DD1 only now and then (but she is 6 now!!) but not often, and DD2 (3½) feeds about 3 times a day. No more babies for me, so I'm not going to have to face the possibility of triandemming!

I have tried DD2 on Oatly and she likes it just as much as Rice milk, so we are making the switch.

I've been on the Oatly website and according to current thinking oats are ok if you are gluten intolerant/coeliac, so I shall try it and see if it effects me at all.
