10mo dairy intolerant bf - accidentally eaten dairy and she is ill - advice needed

I feel like the worst mummy in the world - DD has been suspected dairy intolerant (like her older DB) since about 4 weeks old. This week she started at nursery and was sent home on Day 3 with high temp. So, guessed she had picked up a nursery bug and kept her at home, bfing her more than usual. Saturday, she came out in a rash all over her body (started on face, moved down all over torso). Seen out of hours GP, who thinks it is just connected to the virus she has had and is not contagious.

So, today, was eating some of my dark choc and had a quick look at ingredients - contains milk . Think I have accidentally bought the wrong bar (2 of) and have been eating them all week. So, this would explain the lots of dirty, runny nappies, which I thought were connected to bug and will probably explain why she has been in such discomfort. So, this evening I refused to bf her before bed, but she has also refused a bottle (no news there - she won't take one) - we have some hypoallergenic formula, which she won't touch, but also offered some oatmilk, which is what she has on cereal, in cooking, etc.

So, long winded, but my question is - can I not feed her for 3 days, but continue expressing and hope that the dairy passed out of my system in that time and that my milk production remains, or do I keep feeding and wait out the dairy passing through?

I thought I previewed that, but apparenly I just created conversation .
I should add that she started just biting instead of feeding from me yesterday and think this could be because it is causing her discomfort. We are confident she has a dairy intolerance - have tried weaning her on dairy products, always same reaction (and same as her brother had) and GP is happy for us just to manage it. I just need to know what is for best for next few days. Thanks!

Could you make a big oatmilkie cereal? Then at least she would get some fluids.

Have you been told 3 days?

FollowingYonderSTAR · 17/01/2010 19:55

Good thought - will try an oatmilkie cereal. She woke after 30 mins and nothing was going to persuade her not to bf. She has had a big feed and now gone to sleep - we shall see how the night goes!

I'm being optimistic that within 3 days the milk might be out of my system - I know it will take longer for it to get out of herr system, but figured that at least if it's out of my system, I can feed her without worrying about it being worse?!

do you suspect cows milk protein intolerance or lactose intolerance? If the latter you can buy Colief infant drops and she'll probably be fine with breast milk. If the former it's more problematic. Dairy stays in the system a variable amount of time depending on fast your digestion works but after 3 days shouldn't be much left and maybe less in breast milk.

I'm sort of discounting the rash as the doctor thought it was viral and you mentioned intolerance not allergy but have you tried antihistamine to see if it improves?

FollowingYonderSTAR · 17/01/2010 21:46

Suspect cow milk protein, Tatt, but we just avoid all dairy - with DS we introduce it every few months, but this month it still had the same effect of going straight through him.

Dr on Sat said they wouldn't give antihistamine to under 1 yo, so we haven't, although I gave her a homeopathic remedy earlier and she has had calamine lotion on today, both of which have helped.

Ah well, I shall just have to be extra vigilant going forward, as I don't see her weaning off bfing any time soon .

Thanks for responding. Let's hope my digestive system is working quickly and her response won't last too long.

Don't beat yourself up - it probably is a bug. Surely she would have to be really seriously allergic to react so badly to the limited amount of milk in a bar of dark chocolate processed through your body and ending up in your milk.

I would keep feeding her if I were you.

FollowingYonderSTAR · 17/01/2010 22:19

Thanks Seeker - with DS any dairy was enough to cause diarrohea, but he had reflux too, so was never exact at this age, what was causing the problem. I do think she has had a bug too and as mostly bfing seems to calm her and she won't take any other milk, think I will continue feeding her and ride it out - just feel bad for her.

Thanks for all the responses.

could also be teething, mine always get hideous nappies etc when teething

aaaanyway, which chocolate was it? if it's green and blacks it doesn't really contain milk, even if the label says it does

see here

if the symptoms are usually digestive I'd keep breastfeeding. It's probably the bug causing the problem and the advantages of feeding would outweigh any possible dairy problem.

Not sure how close to one she is but if she did have an allergic reaction to milk piriton can be given under one in an emergency.

tatt · 18/01/2010 08:47

sorry - just read the heading again, so realise she's not that far off one.

bridewolf · 18/01/2010 10:26

she had a high temp then followed later with the rash?

could still be a viral infection, lots of young children have viral hives when fighting a infection.

your child has started nursery and is really bound to get a lot of infections as mixing with a larger group of people.

keep breastfeeding, as its still protecting her from infection, and is still comforting to her esp if starting nursery.

Thanks for all the responses, not managed to get on since Sunday.
thisisyesterday - that's interesting, have just noticed today that the 70% dark choc also saying that. Feel a bit relieved and that maybe it was just the virus causing all her discomfort (not relieved that she had a virus, but relieved that I hadn't made it worse).
Did think she is also teething, but it has been about 2 weeks that her eye teeth have looked like popping through, but no, they're just sitting there ready to burst through the gum
She got better on Sunday and was back to herself yesterday, still fine today, so hopefully she's through it (until the next nursery bug of course...).
Thank you all.

Have you tried switching to goats milk? If you have tried a homeopathic remedy why not have a constituional treatment yourself and just continue feeding as usual

kalo12 · 20/01/2010 22:58

try bifidabacterium infantis powder, this will help heal her gut after the exposure to dairy
