Wheat-Allergic DS2 tolerated a mini-breadstick...

Totally stunned...DS2 (2) is extremely wheat allergic. DS1's friend fed him a mini-breadstick when my back was turned...and he was FINE .

Just wondering what to do next...should I fed him one a day? Should I wait until our pediatric appt in Feb and discuss it there? Anyone have any ideas???

Ooh same here!

Who would've thought a breadstick could make you so happy!

Our dd1 was also wheat allergic but can now have breadsticks and normal dry pasta. Still reacts to bread but can have Bourbon biscuits which is great to be able to give her a treat.

We went slowly, one breadstick every other day at first then ramped up the wheat action.

At our last apt the dietitian had said feed her a teaspoon of weetabix then see how it goes so you could try that?

were these wheat "allergies" rashes and/or breathing difficulties and diagnosed by a consultant? Or were they intolerances to wheat showing up as digestive problems?

They may be outgrowing their problems but if a true allergy I'd suggest being far more cautious than an intolerance. Either way it's better to phone a consultant and discuss with them rather than take advice from people who don't know the background.

Ours was a low positive on the RAST, bad itching and worsening of the excema. Nowhere near the allergic reactions she has had to other stuff (hives, welts, blotches, swollen eyes/lips)

Still good to be able to give her some wheat when we can't give her dairy or egg amongst others.

Thanks for the replies! He had a really high rast score and reacted with hives, diahrea (sp?), vomiting and breathing difficulty. As you can imagine, we're really excited. I'll definitely discuss it at his appt in feb !

Well maybe with such a bad reaction previously you should wait - not long now till Feb

FamiliarFace - in your place I'd ask for a food challenge in February.

FamiliarFace · 17/01/2010 21:01

Think I'll do that. There may only be a small amount of wheat in a mini-breadstick I suppose. I'm just so hopeful...he has so many other allergies that growing out of even one would be life changing for him. Not long until the appt.

it certainly sounds very promising if he ate a whole breadstick, even a mini one. But it's not long to the appointment. Take some similar breadsticks with you (well wrapped in case any other children at the clinic have wheat problems) and maybe you can try one while you are there.
