Coconut - Is it included in a Nut Allergy

I have made some coconut biscuits - with dessicated coconut. I would like to give the dc one each for their packed lunch tomorrow.
The school is a nut-free zone.
I asked both DD's teacher & the deputy head, both thought they would be OK, however neither were sure.
They are nice biscuits and the dc like them but I do not want some poor other child going into major allergy meltdown (sorry forgotton how to spell anaphal... shock)

So opinions please.
Thanks

As ggirl says, coconuts are not treated as nuts for allergy purposes. Unless you've specifically been told to avoid coconut (it is possible to be allergic to them) I'd go for it.

BlueBumedFly · 13/01/2010 22:25

DD was allergic to 'all' nuts tree or ground but could always eat coconut. I think it maybe because it is seed based, cannot remember the actual botanical reason.

Many thanks for checking though xx

Coconut is not a nut, that is a misnomer. It is the fruit of a palm tree.

I was told off for taking in a tin of biscuits to school for ds birthday that contained coconuts. There is a girl in the class who is allergic to nuts.

I was really cheesed of actually as instead of sending the biscuits home the staff ate them

shopalot · 13/01/2010 22:40

"which contained...." sorry

humptynumpty · 13/01/2010 22:43

we have bakery business and have been told by environmental health that products with coconut do not have to be labelled as containing nuts and coconut doesn't have to be listed as an allergen like milk, wheat, nuts etc...

Pixie - hello!

Good thanks, she is still on 5 nuts a day to stop the allergy from returning and all is well. Over Xmas she had marzipan and all sorts with no reaction at all. Blood tests soon to check the IgE then we will be onto the dreaded 'clean' month with no nuts or nuts traces before retesting etc.

Did you read the post when I said she tolerated 32 peanuts under test conditions? That from an eighth is pretty amazing eh?!

Thanks for asking, will do a new post after the February tests to update everyone. x

madrehayunasola · 14/01/2010 22:07

Hi BBF, glad to her your DD is doing well. I often think about it too. Looking forward to hearing about how she goes in the clean month. She is a brave brave girl, hope she knows how much this means to all allergic children.

Thanks guys, we are so entranched in it I forget that there are so many more waiting for news and therapy. Suffice to say at the moment its all good news for nut allergy sufferers!!
