Check the packet. The lactofree milk says it cant be garanteed to be lactose free and is actually a lactose reduced product. Or at least it was last time i checked.

hey my ds uses the milk and soft cheese and yoghurts and he seems to be fine on them, and they r great for older children who have tried cows milk products cos they taste excactly the same

My dd was diagnosed as lactose intolerantat about 1yr and from about 3yr we sometimes used the lactolite, as she appeared to be growing out of it(ie she could then tolerate products that listed lactose on their labels, but still couldn't drink cows milk or eat cheese, yoghurt etc.) The advantage it had for us is that it has a higher fat content than soy milk(good for a skinny preschool child)

Having said that I definately would not try it on a very intolerant child, when my dd was first diagnosed a nibble of a unknown biscuit at playgroup could cause some pretty dramatic results.

How old is you dc?

I am lacto intolerant and think it tastes revolting, but I could be conditioned to the taste of soya milk by now.

DS1 had mild lactose intolerance as a child (triggered by a more severe gluten intolerance). As he grew out of the lactose intolerance (and provided he was 100% gluten free), he was fine on lactofree milk (or something v.similar that they sold in Cyprus). It was so nice to be able to give him something fresh from a cow that we'd drive miles and visit numerous shops to find one that sold it!

How old is the child in question? Has it been confirmed that it is definitely lactose intolerance, and not cows' milk protein intolerance? Many GPs refer to the former when it is actually the latter.

Hi

Sorry its taken a while to reply

DD is 18months old been confirmed lactose intolerant by the paed - the reason i was asking was because we saw the hospital dietician yesterday and she said our prescription milk would stop when DD reaches 2 so then she would need to go onto either lactofree milk or soya milk

Or she could have oat milk with added calcium - did they not suggest that? It's what we use in stuff for ds and I (DS CMP intolerant and breastfed, hence me giving up dairy too).

airliebird · 12/01/2010 13:33

Hi

the dietician said she could have oat milk or lactofree or soya so not sure whats best really ????

I would choose oat, lactofree, soya in that order.

airliebird · 12/01/2010 14:07

ok so what does the oat milk taste like ? I know from experience that the soya has shall we say an aquired taste.

It depends what you use it for tbh. I take my coffee black and don't drink tea, so couldn't tell you what it's like in those, but I can tell you that it makes decent pancakes and toad in the hole! And is fine for making white sauces too. Personally I prefer soya on cereal (although use oat for making porridge), but that's prob just because it's a bit sweeter, and tbh an 18month old isn't going to know the difference!

I haven't tasted lactofree as it still contains CMP, so can't give a comparison with that.
