Ibuprofen Allergy - Please help.

When I was five, my parents have me children's ibuprofen for a temperature. I got massive hives everywhere on my body almost immediately, which were very, very itchy. It was calmed down somewhat with antihistamine but it took some time to fully go down.

Anyway, this was about thirty years ago and allergies weren't what they are now - my parents never bothered to take me to see the GP about it and I just knew to avoid ibuprofen.

I'm getting increasingly worried about it because I don't know anything about this allergy - I'm worried that I'll have an accident when I'm by myself and the paramedics will give me ibuprofen and I'll react.

Is there anything they would do if I went to see the GP, or would they just think I was being fussy? Should I carry antihistamines everywhere with me even though it was only hives? Please help me - I don't really 'do' allergies and I don't really know where to go with this one. . .

Thanks!

the reaction could easily have been unconnected to the ibuprofen. how about mentioning it to your gp and getting a referral for testing? my ds' test was hilarious. it involved taking the medicine while in the outpatient waiting room in case he needed a shot of whatever they give. not the most scientific approach I had imagined

Get a test done and if you do have an allergy you can get a bracelet or necklace which tells people you are allergic.

Hi. I'm allergic to penicillin, aspirin and ibruprofen.
You need to get a test done to find out if it was the ibru you were allergic to and if so, which of the ingredients it was.
Paramedics would not give you ibru in accident but may give you aspirin which is one of the ingredients.
I would get tested, better to be safe. The necklaces are really nice if you need one.
In the meantime, have some piriton to hand just in case.
Hope that helps
