(Friend unwittingly gave it to him). We've given him anti-histamine right away - before when he ate something, he reacted 1-2 hours afterwards and then we gave him the anti-histamine once we realised.

In this case, will the anti-histamine have worked as a pre-emptive strike? Is there any chance he'll display no reaction now? Anyone btdt?

Hello, thanks.

Yes, he's been formally diagnosed with a hazelnut allergy and I have an epi-pen here in case, although previously he just erupted in hives.

Thank you for responding!

Good luck - let us know whether he's okay. How did you find out about his allergy?

QandA · 08/01/2010 19:50

Must be awful for you playing the waiting game to see what happens. Hope everything is ok.

FWIW, I would phone NHS direct and just ask them.

ifeelitall · 08/01/2010 19:56

Thank you all! Yes, my nerves are shot, he's like a ticking time bomb!

We found out because he had a bad reaction after two little bites of cake that (as we found out afterwards) had hazelnuts in it. So we had him tested.

Not in the UK, so no NHS direct here, but I can call the pediatrician if I need to. I have no qualms about calling an ambulance if necessary and I do have an epi-pen for the worst case scenario.

Thank you for your helpful and kind comments, I will keep you posted. (It's been about an hour and a quarter and nothing so far...)

Hopefully the Piriton will just prevent anything happening... I have a nut allergy myself but react straight away.

Feierabend · 08/01/2010 20:00

This is what I am worried about by the way - people unwittingly giving my DDs things they are allergic to. DD2 has an egg allergy and neither of my girls have had nuts yet. How do you handle this?

DaftApeth · 08/01/2010 20:11

dh gave ds a cornetto with hazelnuts in last summer (hazelnuts is his most severe allergy). Luckily, ds knew he was reacting and came to tell me straight away.

Piriton was all that was required luckily to keep the reaction at bay.

I would keep a close eye on your ds for a couple of hours or so. Keep him awake if even if it is bedtime. It will be much easier to spot a reaction with him awake rather than asleep.

Your friend will be scrupulously careful about checking ingredients from now on!

ifeelitall · 08/01/2010 21:33

Hello again - 3 hours on and still no reaction, so hopefully the antihistamine did the trick.

Feierabend (where are you, btw, with that German username?!) - I am usually obsessive about checking for nuts, I left the room for two seconds and in that time, our friend had opened the cookies and given one to ds.

DaftApeth - We're in Austria and it's 10.30 pm here - ds only just going to bed now. I think we're in the clear, tbh (hope I'm not tempting fate).

Pixie - didn't know that about anaphylactic shock happening in the first hour, good to know for future reference.

Thanks again to you all, you helped my nerves!

Sorry ifeelitall, I always assume people are in the UK

3 hours on does sound hopeful that the piriton has worked or there was no reaction. I bet you friend feels terrible.

ifeelitall · 08/01/2010 22:16

No problem Q&A, it's a UK-based site so it's a fair assumption

Yes, friend feels bad but is relieved everything seems to be ok. He was with us once before when ds had an allergic reaction and saved the day then - sprinted a mile uphill to our holiday apt to get the antihistamine while we panicked on the beach with ds.

I know I keep saying thank you, but I'm really grateful to you all for keeping me company tonight; it's hard not to worry, but helps to hear some rational voices.

Glad your DS is fine. I am in the UK

madrehayunasola · 11/01/2010 15:58

So glad to hear you boy is well, bloody hazelnuts, and thank god for Piriton, seems to always do the job!
