dairy free cheese suggestions?

DS is dairy intolerant and while the Sheeze brand is OK for cream cheese, the mozzarella was a bit disappointing.

Any good dairy free cheese suggestions?

Hi Ilove! Happy new year for tomorrow!

I found that the Toffutti one is about the best of a bad lot. It works pretty OK for cooking with, but is not great for just eating. The flavour isn't that strong, but then it's not for real mozzarella either I suppose.

I tried the Cheezly one too, but that seemed to make ds2 sick.

Hope this is not too negative but my suggestion would be not to bother. When ds1 was allergic to dairy I spent ages trying out all the different brands and tbh none of them were that good and none tasted much like cheese. And of course ds wasn't bothered cause he'd never had cheese.

In the end I just concentrated on finding alternative sandwich fillings and skipped it in recipes and he was just as happy. Obviously not everyone's situation is the same but I definitely wasted a lot of time trying to replace something he didn't actually miss.

Hi Academic! Happy New Year to you too!

Will ask our local organic shop to order the Tofutti. It's really for cooking anyway as DD (who is not dairy intolerant) tends to share food with DS who is dairy intolerant and she tends to miss out....

Thanks!

Hi ilovemydogandmrobama!

Yes I have loads of suggestions, as a long term vegan I've tried a few.

My favourites are either 'cheese' slices from Tofutti (Morrisons now sell this type made by by 'Pure', they also sell a 'cheese' spread by 'Pure' as well). These are the easy to find.

Also there is a delicious philly type non-dairy cheese spread I use on sandwiches in summer, you can have a herb variety too. (I forget who makes this)

Also If you like Parmisan, there is a non-dairy 'Parmizano' by 'Life free from' I think we found this in the 'free from' section of Morrisons as well.

Remember you can also buy non-dairy yoghurts from Alpro & I think Benecol do one too. And not forgetting Plamil non-dairy mayonaise!

Also by the way, try non-dairy 'Swedish Glace' ice-cream, its amazzzing!

For further advice, contact the vegan society who can really help you with this & other product advice here

Sorry to go so much, but there's a LOT of good products out there. You usually have a better choice from the non-chain health food shops.

Let us know how you get on!

Wow thanks! So, a trip to morrison's is in order?

Will definitely look at the Vegan society for product advice as DS has been recently rejecting meat, which worries me a bit. Not that I object to him not eating it, (is that a double negative ) but more from the stance that I need to get better organized and ready for protein replacements.

ds2 was intolerant to cows milk produce so we were able to use goats cheese which although foul made it a little easier!
will try to find a few links for you of places we brought things like advent calenders and easter eggs etc plus more every day stuff.ds is also veggie and we just kept up a good vegan diet.hes now grown out of intolerance so has dairy although still veggie.

cheesesarnie · 31/12/2009 22:17

animal aid lets party
vegetarian society

ilovemydogandmrobama · 31/12/2009 22:18

Oh thank you!

When did your DS grow out of the intolerance? DS was diagnosed at 12 months, although his Gastroenterologist said that he was probably intolerant from circa 3 weeks looking at his growth chart.

umm about 2 and a half i think(bad mummy who quickly got used to not buying specialist foods!)i remember getting excited when a uncle asked for the website name for a dairy free Easter egg and i felt great saying he didn't need to go to all that bother!and ds first party where guests didn't turn they re nose up at the food!

once you've got that hard to get diagnoses and sourced alternative foods it all gets a bit easier-until they get invited to parties etc
