Soya formula until what age?

DD1 (aged 2.2) has cows milk allergy and has been prescribed soya formula since 12 months (previously breastfed). The dietician told us we should stop giving her formula when she turned 2 and start using regular soya milk. However I know regular soya milk is quite low fat (similar to semi-skimmed milk I think?) so am still giving her formula at the moment as she's always been a skinny little thing.

Just wondered what other people's thoughts/experiences are, or what others have been advised? Is there any downside to continuing with the formula?

my friends's DD is 2.4 and still on wysoy and the dietician wants her still on it as itv has more calories.

My DD is 22mths and on neocate (as soya intolerant too) and will be on till it she is at least 2.6.

Was told my DS Dietician that DS should not have soy. He's 22 months and on Neocate advance indefinitely.... ugh.

ilovemydog - whats the difference between neocate and neocate advanced??

DD also 22mths is just on "normal" neocate I think

In a smallish pink & gold tin

Not sure. Neocate Advance is in the sachets and DS will be going onto Neocate Nutra when it's given the OK here according to his dietican.

Thanks for the replies.... so it sounds as if those on soya formula are definitely staying on it beyond 2, which was my gut feeling too, just because of the extra calories / protein / fat etc compared with normal soya milk. The dietician told us we should move onto normal soya milk at 2 "because you don't want her to be on formula forever"

ilovemydog, DD1's dietician also said she shouldn't have soya, even though the skin prick and blood tests to soya were negative, but we ignored that because the paediatrician said soya was ok.

We did get given tins of Nutramigen and Neocate to try, but they smelled and tasted so rank I didn't persevere much (actually hardly at all) and just put DD onto soya formula instead. I hope it doesn't cause her any problems as occasionally I've read slightly worrying things about soya...

Does your DS have soya yogurts etc or no soya at all? I'd really struggle without all the soya substitues available, I must admit.

My DD was originally put on soya ff at 9mths and then developed a problem with that too

Which is when we switched to the neocate which she likes

However the major breakthrough is that she now seems to tolerate a small fromage frais yogurt maybe every other day and also small amounts of cooked cheese occassionally ie on a pizza

But soya is a massive problem still

everylittlebeat · 23/12/2009 22:46

That sounds really tough, simpson.

Is your DD allergic or intolerant? Do they think it's likely she'll outgrow it?

We've been told DD will almost certainly outgrow her milk and egg allergies, but the peanut one is probably here to stay. I suspect DD2 might be heading in the same direction as she has quite bad eczema already at the age of 4 months... will find out when we start weaning her I guess - fingers crossed!

no DD is severely intolerant as apposed to allergic iyswim.

However dietician was hoping for more improvement on soya intolerance by now

She is also intolerant to oats so oat milk is out too.

Fingers X for your DD2

Simpson, normal neocate is suitable from birth but neocate advance is suitable frokm 1 year onwards. It has higher calories than normal neocate (100 cals per 100 mls for Advance vs 70 cals per 100 mls normal Neocate). Both are nutritionally complete.

There is also Neocate Active which is also suitable from 1 year onwards and has the same calories as Neocate Advance but is not nutritionally complete. Active has more calcium in it though than the other Neocates, but is only suitable for children that have a reasonably balanced diet apart from being milk free as it is more equivalent to a follow-up formula. This is what ds2 has.
