Eczema baby - what can I use to wash her hair???

DD2 (7mo) has mild eczema on her legs and arms, and quite a lot of hair for her age. I use Oilatum in her bath, but that's no good for washing her hair as it's far too oily. I don't really want to use shampoo as I imagine it would be bad for her skin. If your child has eczema, what do you use to wash their hair? Thanks!

The Doctor Perscribed therapeutic shampoo for my son but his would be quite severe but it might be worth a try it cleared the eczema up n da cradle cap n didn effect his skin

don't use anything. dd1 had pretty bad eczema including scalp. have you tried aveeno lotion on her body? it also will remove eczema from the scalp. just slather it on. do not pick the scalp. just use a soft brush to remove what loosens off.

other people swear by olive oil. again, slather it on 2 or 3 times a day. resist the urge to pick. it should help it go.

dd2 is now 14 mos and despite not suffering eczema i refuse to use any potions on her skin. still soap free.

I don't use anything on my two. When they were little babies it was just plain water and olive oil. They now have Oilatum in the bath and I sometimes put Simple conditioner in my toddler's hair, but just use plain water for the baby.

I think that washing a baby's hair is just a case of rinsing out the food. My DDs' hair smells of hair, which I suppose is a bit at first as we're used to hair smelling of perfume, but you get used to it, and it certainly isn't unpleasant.

Thanks everyone. I suppose I didn't use shampoo on DD1 until she was well over 1 but then she didn't have half as much hair!

we had oilatum shampoo prescribed

Halos and Horns stuff is very good, no parabens or other nasties in it, can be used for hair and body.

I have always had to wash hair, very hairy babies!

My DD has/had eczema (and milk and egg allergies) and we used to use Oilatum in her bath but found she was allergic to it. We didn't put it down to the Oilatum at first but eventually worked out that she was redder coming out of the bath than going in. I believe that Aveeno has milk protein in it so we've never tried that.

We use Doublebase or Dermol bath stuff and epaderm as soap on her skin now, which seems to have cleared things up. We don't wash her hair every day and I've been looking for a perfume free shampoo but haven't found one yet. We just use a mild baby shampoo but very little amounts of it and always at the end of the bath, just before she gets out, so she's not sitting in it for too long.

Oh I didn't know Dermol did bath stuff as well, I loved the cream. Will have a chat with GP when I next go and see her.

My DD2 is also redder when she comes out of the bath but I just put that down to the fact that she's been sitting in warm water!

water

My DD is also allergic to egg and cow's milk protein, and also seems to have a reaction to Oilatum - she went scarlet! I assumed it was lanolin, and avoid all lanolin-containing stuff now. We generally bath her in plain water, but v occasionally use Little Me Organics hair and body wash and haven't had any problems with it.

nigglewiggle · 06/12/2009 11:56

DD2 has bad eczema on her scalp and Dentinox has really helped to clear it up.

alypaly · 06/12/2009 11:59

oilatum junior shampoo,aveeno shampoo

Drusilla · 06/12/2009 12:16

You don't need shampoo, DS is 4 and we still use just water. He has beautiful shiny hair, like someone else said all they need is the food/mud rinsed out. They don't get greasy hair at this age.

Fruitysunshine · 06/12/2009 12:19

I generally use the bath water just to rinse her hair really, it is still very soft and not a lot when it is wet! We used to use Oilatum but now use Dermal on prescription.

Echo the sentiments of Foxy, Aveeno is great on DD's skin. It has really helped keep open wounds at bay.
