Nutmeg

There is a cake sale at DD's playgroup tomorrow and we all have to bring along a contribution.

We were asked in the letter not to use nuts and seeds due to possible allergies.

We've just made some cookies - seasoned with nutmeg.

I suddenly started worrying about the "nut" bit of nutmeg after they were already made!

Having googled it, it looks like it's derived from a seed. I'm now wondering if it is inappropriate to bring them in, considering we are being told to avoid nuts and seeds.

Do I need to go back to the drawing board, or am I being silly? Thanks

YABS...i think...i don't think it's anywhere near being a nut and haven't ever heard of it being associated with nut allergies.
That said, i'm not so good on the old allergy stuff so I hope someone with more clout comes on and tells you exactly...
I mean, who is allergic to nutmeg?! It's not as if you used peanuts or almonds....
fingers crossed

welllll... nutmeg in large quantities has effects on the heart, so i believe, my mum had a friend hospitalised for nutmeg overdose, no joke.

in smaller quantities obviously that's not an issue, but i for one would be posting like you if the idea had occurred to me as you never know with allergies.

Relax, nutmeg is not classed as a nut for allergy purposes (nor is coconut, incidentally).

Thanks for the replies.

Would it be classed as a seed for allergy purposes if not a nut since it is apparently the seed of the plant it comes from? (Only asking cos they've said avoid seeds too - though probably they'd just mean stuff like sesame?)

BTW, yes, I usually am this neurotic

I would understand 'seed' to mean sesame, poppy-seed etc but actually it is a very unhelpful term as wheat, corn, rice etc are seeds. Although technically nutmeg may be a seed I'm sure it would be fine and I am sure that any parent with a nutmeg-allergic child would not allow them to eat from a bake-sale anyway.

Just seen that the bake sale has been and gone, hope you put your cakes in.
