Seafood allergy sufferers - just found out the Pandremix Swine Flu jab is primarily made from FISH OIL!

Found out by reading some small print on a pamphlet whilst waiting for jab at GP surgery. Needless to say, being anaphalyctic with seafood, I mentioned to the nurse, who was unaware. Only contraindications they have been advised of is eggs.

After many phone calls between GP surgery and Swine Flu Medical Advisor helpline, they decided not to give me the jab and to also refuse to give to anyone else with serious seafood allergies.

I'm now on a list to receive the Celvapan.

So - a big warning flag to other seafood allergy sufferers!!

This is what makes me so wary of all jabs!

Government don't care about allergic reactions, they just want everybody to have all jabs offered and if a few die/have a severe reaction they just don't care.

And after all our questions to the health minister last month too

LynetteScavo · 02/12/2009 20:00

That's just shocking!

SkipToMyLou · 03/12/2009 09:23

Oh for goodness' sake! Do they know what they're doing? I got the phonecall yesterday to say my local clinic now has Celvapan and they're organising a session for all the egg-allergic patients, I'm now wondering where I can get hold of the 'small print' to make sure they haven't done something silly like put lactose in it or something else DS is allergic to!

chegirlwithbellson · 03/12/2009 09:32

Just txted my DS. She is allergic and will probably be offered jab due to disability.

Thank you.

CantSleepWontSleep · 03/12/2009 09:37

I don't suppose you know which fish do you? breastfed ds is allergic to some seafood but fine with ordinary fish, and I'm supposed to be having the jab in a few days.

CantThinkofFunnyName · 03/12/2009 10:56

It's squalene which comes from sword fish oil - or something like that. Apparently squalene is in quite a few vaccines - but for those who have severe allergies to anything seafood related, this is serious stuff.

I was really furious as the nurse was trying to roll up my sleeve and pop the jab in (30 secs in and out appt) whilst I was saying "wait, wait, I've just read this".

So I'm now booked for 11th Dec and my second jab on 8th Jan - AFTER I've had my baby. Am currently 35wks pg and asthmatic!

Thank you. Am seeing my GP this afternoon for both ds and I, so will add it to the list of things to talk to him about.

CantSleepWontSleep · 03/12/2009 18:10

Just thought I'd let you know that my GP is ordering the other vaccine for me instead because of this .

CantThinkofFunnyName · 03/12/2009 18:24

I'm really pleased I could help with this .

Worrying though isn't it that so many medics have completely overlooked this ingredient!

Was squalene the ingredient mentioned or did it say it was from fish?

Because squalene is produced by humans too, and from plant sources.

CantThinkofFunnyName · 03/12/2009 20:08

Squalene was mentioned but specifically "fish oil". It also went on to say that it is found naturally common in humans and plant sources. However, the fact that it comes from fish would cause me (and possibly others) serious problems.

I have a shellfish allergy and swine flu jabbed for next week, so just spent a bit of time looking into this.

It appears that the jab should be safe for most fish/shellfish allergic people, as all elements of the protein are removed leaving only the fat.

I got that information from here:

Fish or seafood allergies

The squalene in the GSK vaccine is highly purified. The purification process entails three successive distilling steps at more than 120oC. This means that any protein that might initially have been present is eliminated or altered in the process.

People with fish or seafood allergies are allergic to a protein, not a fish oil. Squalene occurs naturally in the human body. Administering the adjuvanted vaccine presents no problem for people who are allergic to fish or seafood.
