Dairy Free Cheese - is it all horrible?

Has anyone come across a dairy free cheese which is actually edible?

dd really misses out at nursery as they have cheese every now and have been looking for a while for an alternative but to no avail. Just tried the Pure cheese slices and "creamy" spread which I was soooo excited about and they are both disgusting. It's the first time I've seen dd spit food out as she would normally eat anything!
Also tried Cheezly a while back and that was pure evil too.

Dairy free cheese? Well thats any cheese made from sheep or goats milk. There are plenty of delicious ones:

feta cheese made from sheeps milk is delicious.
You can get a hard goats cheese (used to be called goats cheddar but I think the cheddar people made them change the name) which is very nice and not like the usual 'farmyard' tasting goats cheeses.
Then there is halloumi, from goat and sheeps milk.
I bought a spanish hard cheese the other week made from sheeps milk.. you just need to read the labels on cheeses or ask at a specialist cheese shop.

Heaven only knows what the things you have tried were made from, they even sound disgusting.

Now i quite like the cheezly ones, cheddar and mozzerella both fine, but agree 100% about the Pure ones, i too was very excited about trying them but turns out they are the most vile dairy free food i have ever tried. I felt so strongly i had to email them to complain how horrid it was, never got a reply though!

Totally dairy-free or just cows' milk-free?

mustrunmore · 19/11/2009 18:18

They are all vile

you can buy ossau iraty in most supermarkets. Its made from sheeps milk and it tastes lovely.

I like tofutti cream 'cheese' from Holland and Barret and it is perfect for Riven's chocolate 'cheesecake'! DH swears that yeast extract and tahini spread on toast tastes like cheese

Am looking for totally dairy free cheese. Was hoping that she would be ok with goats and rubbed a bit on her arm but she came up in hives straight away so that went out of the window.

Btw if anyone wants to try the Pure cheese they are welcome to it otherwise it is going in the bin! It's a shame they got it so wrong.

did you try Feta? That's sheep if it's proper Greek feta...

Otherwise, I bet it's all horrible. Sorry.

TheInvisibleHand · 20/11/2009 14:48

DD doesn't seem to mind them, but then she doesn't know any better (has pretty much always been dairy allergic). The only one I think is remotely edible is the tofutti cream cheese which is the right texture and doesn't have vile aftertaste.

trixymalixy · 20/11/2009 22:25

I ordered the Pure stuff in my Tesco shop all excited that I would be able to buy it every week, but it was absolutely vile.

The cheezly stuff is semi-alright if cooked, but don't make the mistake of eating it raw!!

The tofutti cream cheese is the best.

TheWicketKeeperIsDown · 21/11/2009 13:43

I agree that Cheazley is vile raw. I made some toasted cheese with it the other day, but it didn't seem to melt like normal cheese. I had better results with grated bits melting into cheese sauce for pasta last night, but I wasn't about to taste it to see if it tasted better cooked as the sauce was made using nutramigen - yeuch!
