19 wk old dd has suddenly got eczema and we're about to go on holiday. HELP!

Over the last three days, my 19 wk old dd has suddenly developed sore red patches behind one of her ears, behind both knees, in the folds of her chubby legs and on her feet. We're off on holiday on Saturday. What do I do? Does she need to see a doctor before we go?

We've got Diprobase, acqueous cream, Aveeno cream and oatmeal bath, Sudokrem, Oilatum and Epaderm at home, all of which I guess I can try on her. Is the only thing a doc could prescribe in addition to this steroid cream? Is it a matter of trial and error and keeping her greased up to try and control it / see what works best? Does she need a bath every day with either Oilatum or Aveeno, or is it better NOT to wash her too often? How often should I put cream on? And, most importantly, why this sudden outbreak? We were away for the weekend at my mum's, could it have been the washing powder she uses???

Lots of questions, sorry but I hope I can get some answers. Thanks so much.

Well, back from Hospital. Paed took one look and said this is not eczema at all. Has never been. It's an infection, either bacterial or caused by a fungus. Or indeed, both. Took some swabs, and prescribed super strong AB plus anti-fungal cream. A bit at my first GP, but if this is true, then everything will clear up in a week or two. Yippee!

Watch this space...

glad she is ok, what a relief.
That was really bad your gp giving you steroid cream for weeping rash.what has the hospital given you, flucloxacillin syrup and fucidin cream?

bet you are relieved.

Thought it was spreading a bit rapidly for eczema, thats why i was worried about the steroid cream. Well that's good news that it should ALL clear up and that hopefully it isnt eczema at all

Feierabend · 22/09/2009 17:07

Not fucidin, the cream is called something else. But yes, that syrup. DD not very impressed.

My mum thinks I should go back to the GP and give him what-for.

what a stressfulk day and what poor treatment from the gp. Hope everything resolves itself quickly

alypaly · 22/09/2009 19:33

Feierabend i agree with your mum. What an idiot. Its pretty basic knowledge .think I would be very annoyed too.

Lost my faith in some GP's and their knowledge over the years.

Yep it's not the first time one of my dds has ended up in A&E after being misdiagnosed by a GP.

alypaly · 22/09/2009 19:56

is it the same one?

Feierabend · 22/09/2009 20:05

No, there's two of them who've got it wrong in the past. One of them diagnosed croup when DD had an ear infection and we ended up in A&E with a febrile convulsion that same night. He did look into her ear, said 'hmm it's a little bit red' and then came to the conclusion that it was just a virus. In fairness, maybe the infection only developed properly during the 7 or so hours between seeing him and calling the ambulance. I suppose children can get worse very quickly.

i love that phrase' just a virus' thats the one they use when they havent got a bl clue

Feierabend · 22/09/2009 20:26

The saga continues. I have the same skin infection now and went to the GP this morning - and guess what, I saw the same one who got DD's diagnosis wrong in the first place. He very nonchalantly ignored this fact though I wonder if DD1 will catch it too...

if it that contagious, is it impetigo as it is rare to catch skin problems so easily.
Do you have eczema too or dry, cracked skin

alypaly · 23/09/2009 12:55

did you say anything to him.....i couldnt have helped myself

Feierabend · 23/09/2009 13:05

Don't think it's that contagious because she's had it for 3 weeks and I've only got it now - it's only one boil on my hand, so could well be there was a little cut in my hand where I got it. And no, I didn't say anything.

Mainly because I wouldn't have known how to word it

OP posts:
alypaly · 23/09/2009 13:24

i would have been fuming

alypaly · 23/09/2009 13:25

has he given you the same antibiotic as dd2

Feierabend · 23/09/2009 13:30

Yes, same stuff. Luckily not the syrup though She hates it.

I AM fuming but that's why I didn't know how to put it...

alypaly · 23/09/2009 14:02

did you have to tell him what hospital gave dd or did he manage to remember what to give. he sounds like a pretty awful gp

Feierabend · 23/09/2009 14:14

Both really! I think it's the standard AB to give for this kind of infection though, no?

OP posts:
alypaly · 23/09/2009 14:30

yes it is.we could both get jobs as gp's
