Urgent Question - If DD is allergic to Pencillin could she be allergic to Trimethoprim?

Long story made as quick as possible.

2 weeks ago DD fell onto the rim of a potty cutting herself 'inside'. Since then she has had a gastro bug and then this Friday got a Urinary Tract Infection and V.trush.

She has had 48 hours of Trimethoprim and now is crying and crying as she says her tongue hurts which I know is a side effect. I cannot seem to settle her down and she is usually an excellent sleeper.

She has had 48 hour of Trimethorpim, tonight she has had nurofen and calpol as temp has been 38-40 over the weekend.

We are off back to the docs in the morning, has anyone any experience.

Only other allergies in the family is the SDD2 is allergic to nuts which I know can predispose penacilin in following siblings.

HELP, I have had this poor crying clingy toddler to the docs 3 times this weekend and 'only mummy will do'.

Any advise please???

OP you poor thing. It never rains but it pours.. I had a really bad UTI just before xmas and was on Trimeoprim (SP? same as your dd anyway) It made me feel awful and when I started shivering, shaking, hallucinating and being in excruciating pain I went to A and E and got taken off the Trime...etc and put on antibiotic drip for a few hours. They said different UTI's react to different medecines and the reason I was getting worse was cos the Trimiwotsit was the wrong one.
When my sister had to get urine sample for her dd they gave her a liner to put in the nappy and empty out but I don't know if your dd will still wear a nappy?
Wine sounds like a vvg idea btw!!

Thanks to everyone who came and supported me last night.

Went to docs today and not only does de have a uti she also has toncilitis!!!! Hence the sore mouth/tongue thing she was telling me.

They have switched her onto erythromycin for the tonsils but said it won't treat the uti.... Great .... Where to now I wonder?

Aw poor kid, sounds like her immune system is really taking a battering! Erythromicin also okay for penicillin-dodgers like myself.

I think you deserve a year off anyone in your family being poorly after this lot!

BlueBumedFly · 13/07/2009 20:09

Thanks Gently - have you found it hard dodging penacillin? I had to tell the drs again today that she could not have amoxil, I would have thought with the computer right there they could check before they prescribe!?!

I would soooo love for everyone to be well for the rest of the year, I know it is asking a lot but it has been a really horrible year. Been in and out of too many hospitals and doctors.

Her immune system was in tatters at Xmas but I hit the probiotics really hard and vitamins and she was so well for 6 months and then bam, the gastroenteritis just wipes out all the hard work and she gets everything going. I am so looking forward to finishing the antibs and getting her back onto probiotics.

She was hyper tonight, too little food, too little sleep, too much medicine, she was slightly tetchy and unreasonable... to say the least!!!

Girlsyear - I did think of asking for a liner as she is still in a nappy - we were close to potty training before the accident but now she is totally against it

Anyhoo, my fried had a liner but up until tonight I could not even touch the nappy area with a wipe without her screaming so I thought sticking a collection bag on might be tantamount to child abuse!! She turned into some sort of exodus child screaming 'leave it alone' I thought any minute her head was going to start spinning round and her eyes were going to turn red!

However, if they reject the sample I got today I will have to bag her! Your reaction sounds dreadful, you must have been scared witless?

It has only caused me a problem once, when I had a womb infection and had tried 2 rounds of the 2 different available antibiotics, (the second course in hospital under obs) which left us with nowhere to go. Luckily bed rest and very good nutrition saw me right - the old-fashioned route - it took a long time, though. There was discussion of trial of penicillin in hospital, but it never came to that. It was a sensible suggestion as, like your DD, my allergy was discovered in childhood 30 years ago so my body might have a different response these days. Glad I didn't have to find out...

BlueBumedFly · 13/07/2009 20:26

DD has only had one reaction but it was quite apparent that there was no way that drug was going to stay in her body. I know from my SDD with a peanut allergy that you either grow out of allergens or the second dose leads to a bigger and worse reaction. Like you I am glad I did not have to find out!

Its mad isn't it with all the new sexy drugs on the market that (I work in the industry) that they cannot come up with a suitable alternative and thus your health was put at such risk. Humph.

Yeah, it is a pain, but it's also given me a slightly more healthy attitude to antibiotics, I think - for me as an adult, they are a last resort, and I am quite well versed on preventative measures now! Different strokes for kids though, infections can get a grip on little immune systems much more quickly.

Maybe by the time your DD is post-puberty there will be some alternatives out there for her!

Anyway, have a restful night and I hope you and DD are soon over the worst. The only good thing about a child being ill is enjoying watching them get better - hope it comes soon.

BlueBumedFly · 13/07/2009 20:35

Thanks Gently, I am hoping for my sunny little girl back soon who has other words back in her vocab apart from no, no, nononononono, nope no, nopey nope, no.

my DD often had bad bouts of toncilitis from a very early age as well. when she had to have wee samples done the hospitalusedti give me sterile wrapped sanitary type pads and a sterile syringe to draw the wee out and into sterile tube thingy.as she got older was a case of following her round again with pre-wrapped smalldish to wee in and then poured into tube. from days old was doing this on a regular basis.

BlueBumedFly · 13/07/2009 21:13

what fun jaluca sounds like a way to pass an evening...! Sorry, just picturing myself syringing up wee! Did she get her tonsils removed in the end?

Sooooo fed up. After 3 days of dd having terrible constipation that nothing would shift and keep her up ( and me) at night it finally gave way to a hopelesly sad half an hour of crying and shrieking.

Now I have temp of 101, sore throat and shivers. Am guessing I have her tonsillitis!!!
