On a gluten free diet what treats can you eat?

I have been on a gluten free diet for a few weeks now. Its good in that I now have no more stomache aches or cramps but I am really missing my cakes and biscuits. Can anyone who has been on this diet for longer tell me how they cope without toast and jam for breakfast or cakes and biscuits?

I have a very sweet tooth and miss my home made cakes which I can no longer eat. I have tried rice flour but it doesn't work very well. I am also having real trouble finding things for breakfast as I am not a fan of yogurt. Any tips would be gratfully recieved.

Hoochie - get thee behind me with your temptations!

I have managed to lose a whole stone in weight in 2 months by going GF/LF as well as feeling hugely in better health. I would just be too tempted to pig out eat to excess on Genius bread.

I have to be a martyr to this - its like a hair shirt of dietery virtuousness. DW is also noticing the benefits.

DottyDot · 05/07/2009 11:55

I put 2 1/2 stone on when I had to go gluten free, which I think shows what determination I have...

Trying to lose it now so Hoochie - am banishing all thoughts of g-f 5 minute choc cake with custard...!

oooh, never heard of Genius bread. I need to do a big shop so will try Tesco this week and see if I can get some.

Crimbles coconut macaroons are GF and to die for.....you can't just have one!

Crimbles do loads more that just macaroons and brownies and you can get a variety of their stuff in Tesco, Sainsburys and Waitrose. It seems to change week to week.

I know it's not of much use to OP but hopefully it'll be of some enjoyment to the rest of you.

CMOTdibbler · 05/07/2009 21:57

Oh, you have to get the Genius bread Lacka - I made a sandwich and took it as a packed lunch. And enjoyed it

I had Daim cake in the Dunelm mill cafe today - no shortage of GF treats here. They also had the GF Byron Bay cookies and I exercised great self control by not buying those too.

ABetaDad · 05/07/2009 22:08

CMOTdibbler - great tip on Dunelm. I love that shop and really struggle getting a nice cake and up of coffee while out.

The normal coffee chains just don't seem to cater for GF/LF too well.

CMOTdibbler · 05/07/2009 22:13

Costa do a gf biscuit - not sure what it is currently. Was a shortbread with raspberry jam, but I'm sure that it has changed recently, but have blank on what to.

Starbucks - belgian choc slice or Valencia orange cake. GF sandwich if they stock them (v variable)

Cafe Nero do a choc brownie that is GF

My local cafes in our small town all do a gf cake - tis great !

We'd not been in the cafe before, but DS needed to refuel and it was very good value

I've not read the whole thread yet (too tired at moment) but I eat these www.eatnatural.co.uk/View-Products.aspx?Category=EatNaturalBars&Page=1 They are delicious!! Apologies if they have already been mentioned

swissmiss · 05/07/2009 22:24

ABD - M&S cafes usually have GF muffins or similar.

Spidermama · 05/07/2009 22:27

This is a great website for info on food allergies.

Spidermama · 05/07/2009 22:28

If you live in Brighton or Hove, Heather Mill's new cafe has just opened up and offers a range of gluten free stuff.

ABetaDad · 05/07/2009 22:32

CMOT/swissmiss - thanks for that. I did not know M&S did some GF stuff. Costa/Cafe Nero are a bit sparse I have found.

DottyDot · 06/07/2009 12:53

oh god the Dime cakes are absolutely wonderful - the best cakes I've had since being gluten free...

You can get them from Tescos in the frozen bit, or Ikea - just yumptious!

LackaDAISYcal · 06/07/2009 14:10

Caffe Nero Choc brownies are lush {smile]

I'm off to Tesco later to stock up on Genius bread....

I tried the new Doves Farn breakfast cereal recently; it's a bit like Special K and makes a change from Mesa sunrise flakes or porridge.

I never knew that Daim cake was GF....all those times in IKEA where I had nothing while the rest of the family tucked into cakes!

girlsyearapart · 06/07/2009 18:53

lavender, I bought a book called "Gluten Free bread and cakes from your breadmaker" that has lots of nice recipes in it.

I bought it on Amazon.

LackaDAISYcal · 12/07/2009 23:07

Quick update from me.

Got some Genius bread today and I am at how breadlike it actually is. Well, maybe not breadlike, but it is definately NOT cakelike and it doesn't taste of preservatives and nonsense like some breads out there.

As hoochie says, there is definately witchcraft going on there

Am looking forward to actual proper sandwiches for lunch tomorrow for the first time in 5 years!!!!

Ans1 · 07/07/2010 19:44

Colin the Caterpillars from M+S are a yummy treat.

HibernoCaledonian · 08/07/2010 00:08

Both my MIL and one of my SILs shouldn't eat gluten for medical reasons. My MIL buys Odlum's Tritamyl flour (as do I if I'm baking for her) I've made some gorgeous cakes with it and even used it to make home-made pizza bases when I ran out of normal flour. MIL makes cream sponge cakes out it that are fabulous. You honestly wouldn't know the difference if you weren't told.
