Eczema & formula/cows/goats milk

DS2 (11 months) has typical baby eczema. Backs of knees, armpits, from belly button to throat, base of spine to neck.
We use Aveeno to moisturise and Fucidin when it flares up. We've found Fairy no-bio the only washing powder that doesn't cause flare ups.

He was bf for 6 months, then for last 5 months has been on Hipp Follow-On milk. DH bought Hipp Growing Up milk last week and it seems to have set off his eczema again (lots of scratching!!)

DS1 (nearly 4) had severe eczema on his face, as well as more typical eczema on knees and pits. He has been on goats milk for 2 years because we discovered cows milk was giving him loose stools and occasional vomiting. His eczema has cleared up totally as well.

I know babies under a year shouldn't be given cows milk, but what about goats milk?
Should we just move DS2 straight to goats milk, or does he need a formula milk?

Sorry this is long. If you've read this far then Well Done and I hope you can help!

how far into 11months is he?

EdwardBitMe · 18/06/2009 18:40

He's one on 14th July, so he's "just" 11 months.

OP posts:
misdee · 18/06/2009 18:41

i'd wait until about the 1st july

switch back to the other milk for him.

EdwardBitMe · 18/06/2009 18:44

So I should give him the Follow on milk instead of the Growing up milk, for another couple of weeks? Then onto the goats milk?

OP posts:
misdee · 18/06/2009 18:45

yes.

iof the growing up stuff made his skin bad then go back to the follow on stuff

EdwardBitMe · 18/06/2009 18:51

The Hipp Follow On is obv made with cows milk.
Is there another "follow on" type milk based on goats milk or other milk substitute?

OP posts:
EdwardBitMe · 18/06/2009 18:58

Anyone?!

goats milk formula was withdrawn a while ago.

i think the others are only available on perscription

EdwardBitMe · 18/06/2009 19:03

oh well, itchy scratchy baby boy will just have to put up with it.
I'm not sure it's worth bothering the GP about. She's not suggested anything other than "Put more Aveeno on it"

My dd 2 had bad excema as a baby and at 6 months was prescribed soya milk. Totally free so that was one benefit. Her excema cleared up but dont know if it was down to that or the fact that she just gradually grew out ot it. She is 2 now and drinks full fat milk like it is going out of fashion. you could ask your GP about prescribing soya milk.

K999 · 18/06/2009 19:28

Also running a bath using a muslin cloth full of oats really helped soothe DD2.

You can buy nanny goats formula over the internet.

JudyBlume1019 · 18/06/2009 20:05

why don't you get nanny goats milk formula from vitacare

EdwardBitMe · 19/06/2009 22:00

Thanks for the replies.

I'll check out that link JB, and maybe go to docs next week to see about soya milk.

I would go to your GP and insist on a referral for allergy testing. My DS was covered in eczema for 9 months until I stopped breastfeeding and he had an allergic reaction to cows milk. Luckily I was quickly referred and he was diagnosed with a cowsmilk and egg allergy. The consultant told me not to try any animal milks as most children who were allergic to cows milk were also allergic to a degree to all other milks. My DS got a prescrption milk thereafter( not soya )At the time -6 years ago soya was not advised - can't remeber why. The eczema cleard up v quickly and has never returned. Creams just help the symptoms not the cause.I think you really should see a specialist re food allergies who will hopefully sort it out.

EdwardBitMe · 19/06/2009 22:48

Thanks kna. I didn't know if I was making a fuss about nothing.

DH has a severe nut allergy, and we've always been told to just avoid nuts as a family, and that DS1 & DS2 couldn't be tested until they were 4. I just assumed we would get a similar answer for other food allergies.

I don't know about nuts but DS2 had bad eczema from birth and because of DS1's food allergy he was referred much earlier and was tested at 4 months - he had an egg allergy only and got prescribed v strong creams that cleared it up pretty quickly and he has never had a problem since. I don't think GP's always have the specialist knowledge re food allergies and just prescribe creams. Also once I got referred to the consultant she arranged for me to see the dietician who I saw every six months to make sure that they were getting enough calcium and other nutrients in their diet which was really useful. Got alot of recipe ideas / general info so it really does make it much easier if you get a referal as hospital tke it v seriously and you are not floundering around on your own. Good luck. For what it's worth both have now grown out of their allergies.

Nighbynight · 20/06/2009 12:25

Egg and soya reactions often go togeher, thats probably why you got warned off soya.

Can anyone explain why we're meant to give babies follow on formula after 6 months rather than goats milk? I'd rather give her something natural when I stop breastfeeding rather than a powdered product. What will happen if I give her warm goats milk at night? I don't want to make her ill or give her allergies. Does anyone have any advice?
