Ideas for Dairy/Soy allergic ds

My boy is now 7.5mths old. He has 3 meals a day and app. 5bf during the day and at least one during the night. We are following a guide for introducing solids to allergic children and so far he has pear, potato, kumara, courgette, rice, carrot. He has also tried but had a reaction to peaches. We introduced rice milk as part of his diet making rice pudding with it which he will eat. We have tried Neocate formula with absolutely no success whatsoever. Will the rice milk be enough when he weans? He will have a soy challenge at 12mths and dairy at 24mths, if these cause reactions can I provide enough calcium through ricemilk, he won't drink it straight, how much does he need. Starting to worry as am finding bfeeding hard going and would like to know that there is a chance I can wean him at 1 without risking his health too much. Any ideas?

my ds had no tests at all, so you seem to be getting some care over in NZ. They may give mine a blood test now. Just wondering, did Saac have blood in his stool before or after the operation?

Hi his blood occured after the operation. Some of the research that I did when he had his initial bowel perferation suggested that children that have abdominal surgery are often sensitised toward allergies but that these can be tempory and once the gut heals they may tolerate the allergens. It may take his gut a while to heal. Did you have any luck with finding probiotics? I would not worry about the meat, according to our paeds babe is ok to have a serving of meat everyday. There is a good website for weaning children who have allergies at www.hallpublications.com, there is a weaning guide link there which we use. Eggs come well down on the list, so I would leave those when he has a history of colitis. There are plenty of options for including calcium and iron through meat and veges, do a google search to find out the content in foods he is having you may be suprised. Also blood tests can keep a track of their levels and put your mind at ease about whether they are ok or not. Isaac doesnt have any neocate at all and has not yet taken to solids (he is now 8mths old) he eats very little, still on around an icecube of food per meal, sometimes eating more at breakfast. A total each day of at the most a cup of food sometimes much less. He does still have plenty of bfeeds though. I try to follow an attachment parenting approach all except for cosleeping and let Isaac guide me as to his needs. There is also a product called fluradix (sp)in NZ which is a suppliment for children which you may be able to access over there.

thanks saccsmum. just a mystery why these things occur. my ds has had no blood tests at all, they just want to do as little as possible, which i don't mind if they gt him better, but as things are still not sorted i wish they'd do more. I think the care is probably better in NZ.

by the way, i spoke to a good nutritionist, who gave us probiotics, and also a yeast, used to be called brewer's yeast, now called sacharomyces boulardii , which is supposed to promote gut healing.

Hello - This is my first time using a message board so appologies if I'm not doing it right!

My ds is now 14 months and has been diagnosed with a dairy allergy/intolerance. He is taking the Neocate Active milk but eats very little. He has started nursery and will not eat anything whilst he's there so by the time I pick him up he's starving but over tired so won't eat at home! We are under the hospital as his weight is very low (16lbs)and are having tests done to make sure that he doesn't have anything else wrong, but in the meantime I was wondering if anyone had any tips for increasing his calorie intake/encouraging him to eat and generally staying sane!! I am so glad I found this site as at times it seems as though I the only one struggling with this!

I was bf my DS1 when I got pg with my DD - DS1 was 9 months old. I knew he was allergic to milk and soya but thought he would grow out of it. When he was a year old (and I was 4 months pg) he had a serious reaction to milk and I knew that I had a problem as in 5 months I would have another baby to bf. And of course during pregnancy your milk changes (presumably to put off the older child) so he fed less and less.

As he couldn't have soya we used to make sure he had ready brek made with rice milk for breakfast every day. Also he would drink rice milk with some juice in it to make it taste nicer. We used the red high-juice in the vain hope it might taste like a strawberry milk shake. Vile but he got used to it and now loves it.

I always worried myself sick that he would not have enough calcium. Apparently the calcium in drinks like rice dream separates easily and you don't take in as much as it says on the pack. We saw dieticians who were never much help, etc etc. BUT he is now 8, one of the tallest kids in the class, still allergic but VERY healthy. I predict you will worry yourself to bits too and in the end he will also be fine.

I used to remind myself that, coming from the East End of London, my great-grandparents probably grew up on bread and tea and still survived.

can he tolerate goats milk as this is the only milk my ds[10 months ]can tolerate,he reacted to all the hypoallergenic milks prescribed by the drs and he had patch/prick and rast testing and they all came back clear to goats milk although they cant prescribe it[expensive] but not as expensive as the neocate and nutramigen..he has nanny goat formula and now eats goats milk cheese[loves it big time] also has goats yog and i can cook with ordinary full fat goat milk too...he s also allergic to egg and soya so was a complete nightmare for me to breastfeed..my diet went downhill but i persevered and now i can eat dairy and he doesnt react
