Congratulations ali!

as you know, dd had egg, milk and soya allergies + severe reflux + hernia +eczema/asthma

ds was born and straight away ended up back in hospital with bronchiolitis as he picked up a cold from his sister grr. Managed to breastfeed him longer but when I weaned him off the breast, we found out he was milk allergic (but not for as long as his sister). He also had reflux. He was on heavier inhalers than his sister till 3 then miraculously, he got a lot better. Doctors said that his chest had been weakened by the brochiolitis....

he's now 7 and has no allergies or asthma or eczema (though still has a tendency to get quite hideous chest infections!)

When I spoke to the paed, he said with 2 allergic parents, there was a good chance that some or all of the children would have some sort of allergy.

Don't know what you and your dh's history is like in that area.

alibobins · 06/06/2009 21:05

Just Dh he's allergic to dogs and gets wheezy in winter.
I'm worried because this will be a winter baby too due new years day.
Ds was poorly from day one and had his first chest infection at 2 weeks.
Ds is still bad and he will be turning 5 december. Recently found out from ph study that he has reflux too.
I wasn't planning on having another as worried about all the night dashes to hospital.

yes ds was a november baby. He also had extended jaundice! Apparently, bronchiolitis and jaundice very par for the course with winter babies though you know that doesn't mean it's a certainty.

Tbh with you Ali, ds, since he was 3, has only ever been to the doctor about 3 times. He's the healthiest child I know.

Sometimes those second children pick up everything going then develop awesome immunity!

Obviously, no-one can guarantee everything but I will say first of all, you are SO much better prepared second time round. If there are problems the doctors listen to you so so so much more with a second child because they know you've been there done that. And it isn't as frightening for some reason.

AND there's a very good chance the baby will be absolutely fine :-).

alibobins · 06/06/2009 21:13

Thanks suppose its a case of wait and see.

fingers crossed ali (and tbh, I felt exactly the same way as you when I fell pregnant the second time - would also recommend talking to your paediatrician as I found that quite reassuring)

what a lovely time of year to have a baby (christmas/new year )

trixymalixy · 06/06/2009 22:01

Alibobins, firstly congrats on your pregnancy!!

I am also pregnant with DC2.

DS is allergic to dairy, eggs, soya, legumes, sesame, cats and possibly prawns, grass and gelatin.

I too am worried about DC2 being as allergic. It's so hard to know whether you should be eating/avoiding anything or not during pregnancy.

One thing i am doing is taking probiotics and prebiotics every day. God knows if it'll help or not!!

At least this time I will know about the possibility of allergies and will know that cutting out dairy etc might help avoid the months of screaming while bfing.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you and me and our Dc!!!

keresley · 06/06/2009 22:12

My ds (now aged 4) is allergic to nuts and eggs, plus he has always had eczema. My dd (aged 2 now) is not allergic to anything nor has eczema. We though she would be so it was a pleasant surprise when we found out she was clear. However, we treated her as if she had allergies for the first 6 months just in case.

Bilbomum · 08/06/2009 11:43

DS(2.5)has allergies to dairy, eggs, sesame, soya, peas & nuts and severe eczema.

DD (just turned one) doesn't look like she's got any allergy problems as yet. Have to admit I've chickened out of trying eggs and sesame so far and won't be trying nuts until she's much older. She's got small patches of eczema but nothing like her brother.

I don't think it's a given that you'll have problems with the next one (fingers crossed). It does however make weaning a nightmare when you're used to hiding away foodstuffs!

bruffin · 08/06/2009 13:04

DS 13 allergies to treenuts, seseme, hayfever, cats and was allergic to peanuts but appears to have grown out of it, also had a bit of baby exzema when teething. His allergies didn't really show up until he was 4.

DD 11 has no sign of allergies at all, although was born with a cold, which she had caught from me and did spend the first year with a lot of colds but other than that very healthy.

tatt · 08/06/2009 21:00

a child with atopic parents may have problems but a sibling doesn't increase the risk much - this child is far more likely not to have allergies than to have them. But taking probiotics and eating a healthy diet with lots of vegetables will help reduce the risk of eczema and asthma, even if it may not do much for food allergy. Fish oil helps probiotics work better and is good for brain development.

There seems to be a bit of evidence for vitamin D being beneficial in avoiding asthma (see article below) but supplements can be dangerous. However making sure you get out in the sun over the summer will build up your vitamin D levels safely.

taniashort · 09/06/2009 16:54

I took pro-biotics when I was pregnant with my second child - there was a fairly well substantiated piece of research at that time. She has NO alllergies (hurrah!) so who knows if it helped or not; but I'ld go with it as there should be no harm in it.
good luck!

I am very atopic. Dh has mild hayfever but plenty of allergies on his side of the family.

Ds1 -allergy to peanuts, dairy allergy (now outgrown), possible new allergy raised its head the other day. No eczema or asthma (so far).

Ds2 - tiny bit of eczema, possible mild soya allergy but fine with everything else to eat (haven't tried nuts yet).

Personally I found the first year w. ds2 v. stressful allergy-wise (weaning was v. nerve-wracking) cause I was sooo much more aware of the possibilities. But so far the reality has been much better

Congrats by the way

alibobins · 10/06/2009 21:10

Thankyou
Think I will be sooooooooooooo worried when weaning new dc but think thats because I know what too expect.

I have two girls 21months- perfectly clear peachy skin, no allergies. The second 9 months severe eczema, allergic/intolerant to dairy, soya, tomato, plum, banana, wheat amongst others. My husband had eczema as a baby and now hs mild asthma. We were told we have a 1 in 4 chance of any other children suffering. The odds increase if both parents have had allergies though. Hope to have another one or two children but will be worrying that they have the same. At least we have one without so that shoul reassure you a bit!

alibobins · 07/03/2010 19:00

Just to update this thread
Ds1 was born 3 weeks early in Dec spent a week in NICU with infection then home for 10 days then back in with bronchoilitis on oxygen for a week

He is diary intolerant, covered in excema and on inhalors and gaviscon for reflux we see the consultant on 31st march.

OP posts:
hanreeoak · 07/03/2010 20:09

Hi, My DD1 has allergies to wheat and dairy, reflux, terrible excema and many other health problems, and this week we have found out that DS3 is allergic to wheat, dairy and egg, he also has terrible excema.

But my DD2 has no health problems and no allergies. I did not do any differnt through the pregnancies and BF all (still feeding DS3).

I agree that you will have more knowledge this time to spot things earlier, if needed.

Congratulations on the pregnancy DS3 was born on 14th Dec a christmas is really special.

trixymalixy · 07/03/2010 22:27

Sorry to hear that alibobins .

I also was pregnant when you started this thread. DD is also allergic, but only to egg so far. She thankfully isn't allergic to dairy like DS.

Hopefully your DS will grow out of it.

alibobins · 08/03/2010 17:00

trix one good thing is that we kind of know what we are dealing with x x

Whelk · 08/03/2010 20:23

Alibobins. Firstly congratulations on the arrival of your son. I'm so sorry to hear that he is also an allergicky one.

When you started the thread my dd2 had just arrived and we didn't know whether she had allergies. (dd1 is allergic to eggs, lentils, pineapple, strawberries).

We found out at 8 months that she is allergic to dairy and also egg. We don't know if there are more things (nuts etc,).

Its very disappointing but we have coped OK (so far!!!). I hope you are doing alright. All the best for seeing the consultant.
Unmumsnet like hugs!

Whelk · 08/03/2010 20:27

Thought you might want to know that I took probiotics through pregnancy and exclusively bf to 6mo. Also neither I nor my dh have any allergies eczema or asthma and nor do our parents.

The specialist we see said in his opinion there isn't really anything you can do to prevent allergies from occurring and I quote "its a shame that mothers are led to believe this as they then spend a lifetime blaming themselves". I nearly cried.

girlsyearapart · 08/03/2010 20:30

Blimey- wish I hadn't read this update [selfish emotcion]

Am now 19 wks pg with dc3 and was hoping we would get a non allergicky one and was hoping for a positive outcome from you ladies.

The paed has decided to prescribe hypo allergenic formula for the baby and wean onto 'normal' formula rather than the other way around.

I just can't go back to how the first year with dd2 was

Find out next tuesday if she has peanut allergy..

Anyway hope things are going as well as can be expected for you

Whelk · 08/03/2010 20:42

Girlsyearapart- the specialist did say we had been unlucky and that he didn't often see siblings who were both allergic. In fact we were treated by all as quite the novelty!
One big pisitive is that dd2 doesn't have eczema nearly as badly as dd1 and although she has the added dairy allergy she is the happiest easiest baby imaginable.

Good luck for Tuesday. We will find out about peanuts for dd2 in May {scared emoticon}

girlsyearapart · 08/03/2010 20:51

If dc3 turns out to be as bad as dd2 I will defintely not be able to convince DH to go for the 4th dc..

I think I am just being hormonal though so just ignore me. At 18mo dd2 is a total walking talking ray of sunshine, the excema is much more under control and we have her diet pretty much worked out.

It just makes me sad to think of how much she suffered as a baby and we didn't realise for so long it was due to allergies. Makes me feel so guilty.

Won't let dc3 be fobbed off by doctors like that.

Thanks for the luck for Tuesday I am taking someone supportive with me as liable to become gibbering wreck if it's a positive..

trixymalixy · 08/03/2010 21:11

Whelk, I also took probiotics and exclusively bf to 6 months.

Alibobins - it is much easier 2nd time around as we already are used to coping with allergies.

DS suffered terribly in his first 6 months as it took ages to realise that he was reacting to allergens through my breast milk. At least this time round, it was pretty clear to me that DD was reacting to egg, so i could avoid it.

alibobins · 08/03/2010 21:12

The one positive from this experience is that I was more aware of what too look out for.
Ds1 didn't see a consultant until he was 9 months and that was after an anaphylactic reaction and was on diary until then too.

Ds2 has been on nutramigen from around 8 weeks and is doing a bit better from it although he is still rather sick

girlsyearsapart good luck for next tuesday x x
