Allergies and intolerances

Is it possible to develop an allergy to something as an adult having previously been absolutely fine with it?

I seem to have developed an allergy to fruit in the last couple of years. When I eat it the roof of my mouth and the back of my throat starts to itch and I've noticed on a couple of occasion that my speech feels weird so I assume my tongue or something is swelling a bit. Does that sound like an allergic reaction?

It started with plums and peaches but now includes pears, most varieties of apple, strawberries, apricots, cherries and some grapes. Does the fact that it seems to be spreading mean anything?

I also used to be okay with tinned fruit but even that sets it off now.

Does anyone know why this has happened, if it's likely to go away again and if I should be going to the GP about it?

Finding out which antihistamines work for you is trial & error btw. YOu could buy the various different ones over the counter and trial them yourself.

I have this too, in conjunction with loads of other allergies. Allergy specialist was adamant I don't eat any of the fruits/veg that set me off... I live on a diet of raw bananas, raisins, lettuce, cucumber. I can eat most other fruit/veg as long as it's well cooked.
It's very hard to eat out now, but I haven't had a bad reaction for months which is great

I developed a dust mite allergy at 42 years old! I just thought I was run down and kept getting colds when my nose was streaming and I was having sneezing fits along with weeks of wheezing!

Took someone at work telling me my symptoms were either an allergy or hayfever to get me checked out and he was right.

I buy the antihistamines with cetirizine in - the other types don't work for me. I don't get them from boots etc, b&m bargains do them for 49p a box of 7

I get free prescriptions because I have an underactive thyroid so trial and error would be fine via the GP .

hotcrossbunny, have your allergies increasded as you've got older. I'm very curious as to why this has happened now.
