I have developed an itchy rash on my breasts which is affecting mya bility to feed. I have since gotten one on my body too but slightly different. I have seen four doctors and they could npot decide if it was excema, allergy or bacterial but gave me hydrocortisone, steroid and antihistamine. Could only take the latter for one day and got so upset bottle feeding and now have milder one but not effective.
Is there anyone who can help - desperate!

Do you think it might be a yeast rash or thrush? If so you could ask your pharmacist for gentian violet.

if its an allergy and you avoid exposure to the allergen it will go away. If its eczema adding probiotics to your diet may help (live yoghurt the easiest source). That's good when breastfeeding anyway as it reduces the risk of eczema in your child. If its bacterial they won't help - maybe anti-bacterial soap?

You can get antihistamine cream, sold as bite cream in Boots, which might give some relief.

Sorry that's not a lot of help. Be careful only to use non-biological soap powder in case its soap residues causing a reaction (and yes it can happen any time, even with something you've used for years). Keep a food diary to see if you can identify anyhting.

Could it be heat rash?

i got ezcema when breastfeeding.

dont crush wet/damp nips back in bra, leave to dry naturally as possible.
buy some good fitting cotton bras , with no seams, or nylon lace stuff.

dont let soap or shampoo get on boobs, rinse them carefully. pat dry , gently.

keep a good routine of using the stuff prescribed.

it takes some time to get things back in control, and persistance.

hope this is helpful,...........try not to scratch. ( get them out and free during the day, it will help. if a little draughty at times !)

You have my sympathy. Over the last few days I've come out in a hideous rash on my face, neck and shoulders
It's been really itchy at times, particularly ay night when feeding DD when there's nothing else to think about!
My GP gave me hydrocortisone and eczema cream (I've alwways had eczema on an off), and advised me to only take piraton if i really needed to as it can get through to breastmilk.
I've foolishly been out in the sun today and made it much worse (I've learnt my lesson now!)
I've not eaten anything unusual, or put anything different on my skin.
Anyone out there got any ideas?
Any suggestions on how to get rid of this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Could it be PUPPS maybe? I know a lady who got this post-partum despite not having it during pregnancy.

runnerragged · 29/05/2009 21:51

Sorry - what's PUPPS?! Thanks for suggestion x

JetLi · 29/05/2009 22:08

Sorry - took a few minutes to find what looks to be a decent link about PUPPS. Our friendly neighborhood herbalist made her up a huge pot of ointment with chickweed extract and all sorts of gentle BF-friendly things in it and it did the world of good. Her's was mostly on her thighs and lower legs. I can post the tel. of the herbalist if you think it would be useful?

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly and for your suggestions. I'll give it a try. I'll also check out your 'decent link'. I'm currently getting some relief from a wet flannel on the affected ares, but it's leaving my skin v dry. x
