Egg Allergy?

We gave DS some scrambled egg this evening for tea- I put bits of it on his highchair tray (along with some small pieces of chicken and some raisins) as he likes to feed himself a fair bit now.

He didn't want to eat the egg, so probably only ate a tiny bit, but it was all over his tray. About 15 mins later, we noticed a really nasty rash over his arms. I am assuming this is related, as this was the first time he'd had scrambled egg, although he's had egg in other stuff. His arms would have been touching the egg a lot. I suppose it's could be a coincidence, but I'm wondering it he could have some kind of egg allergy. Has anyone had any experience of this?

well, interestingly there is a theory about children who are allowed to self-feed avoiding foods that they are allergic/intolerant to.
so the fact that he didn't want to eat it would tie in with that?

it is certainly possible I think to react to plain egg but not when it's cooked in small amounts in toher stuff I believe

That would weirdly make sense, because he picked out the raisins and a few bits of chicken! The rash seems to have almost gone now, but we managed to take a few photos of it to show the GP. Can I insist on a referral to a specialist based on this one instance? DS goes to nursery and is about the start on school dinners this week (he is 11 months old)- am now a bit worried about him reacting again.

Hello

I'm new to this website but saw your thread and thought I would post a reply as my daughter has reacted to egg.

She has eaten things containing egg a lot and still continues too (pasta, cake etc), but when she was about 2 1/2 (she's 4 now), we had ham, egg & chips for tea one day. She was just dipping her chip in the egg yolk (so I think it just touched her and she didn't eat a lot of egg) but within about a minute her lips started to swell. After a few minutes her lips were so swollen they looked like they would burst. She then started to cry and was sick (we did panick a bit when we saw it happen because it was so quick, so this probably didn't help her). We gave her Piriton, called NHS Direct and they told us to called an ambulance. Interestingly the ambulance man had seen something similar before. She was taken in to check her over and we waited a few hours until the swelling had gone down. The hospital said all they would have done was to give her Piriton, so we did the right thing. We still give her stuff containing egg, but not egg on its own and even when we bake, I don't let her touch egg or the uncooked cake mix in case this causes a reaction. (Sorry to ramble, but I hope it helps!)

well iw ould talk with the GP and see what they say, hopefully you will have a sympathetic one who knows what s/he is on about!
I think pics to back it up is fabn though and will def help.

you could do another test, just by placing some on his skin and seeing if he reacts again

as for nursery I would maybe tell them that you're investigating this and could they ensure that he isn't given any egg until you know for sure
I do know that it's also possible for a reaction to take a while to "come out" so to speak. so you can eat something fine, then next time have a really mild reaction, and then it gets worse because your body remembers and reacts to it more strongly. so that could be what has happened with him

thepurplestar · 25/05/2009 20:41

I'll let nursery know then.

I'm allergic to penicillin- but didn't develop it until I was 11- I suddenly reacted one night, and ended up spending a week in hospital I was so bad with it. So maybe I'll try and cut egg out as much as possible for the forseeable future, just until we're sure.
