We're BLW and today I gave DS2 a quarter of a tomato to chew on. He enjoyed it but as soon as he finished I noticed his skin had gone very red round his mouth - it was a smooth red not a spotty red, IYSWIM. He hardly swallowed any, I don't think, but he was waving it round his mouth for a bit, smearing it over his face etc

He has eczema, DS1 has asthma, DH's brother has coeliacs, so there are allergies in the family.

What should I do next? Will they allergy test at this age? (29 wks)

I and dd have eczema and we are allergic to tomato and raw potato if it comes into contact with our skin, like round the mouth or on hands, although fine to eat it. Think they are both from the same botanical family. It stings a bit though, so have to wash it off straight away and usually put some cream on to soothe it. No idea if they test though, might be worth asking gp, think it's quite a common allergy/reaction.

My GP said this is really common and I think it is due to the skin as opposed to the actual tomato. My DD has this and she is fine with tomato sauces but not raw uncooked tomato with the skin on.

FrannyandZooey · 23/05/2009 19:59

tomato rash really common
i would avoid it for now

giraffesCantRunA10k · 23/05/2009 19:59

I used to look after children who had this - but only sometimes when eating tomato based sauces. (home made) They still eat them now and dont get the rash much, only very very infrequently. The rash doesnt bother them at all and they are not aware of it. One of the children has severe allergies and excema.

Children in our family all react in some way to tomato. My sister's lips used to swell up, my niece used to go red round the mouth and my DD used to get a very bright red and sore bottom. We have never had any allergy testing but they have all grown out of it.

I would keep an eye on him next time he has tomato and monitor him. I would take him to your GP if the reaction seems stronger.

chickenmama · 23/05/2009 20:13

My dd had the same reaction when she was younger, to tomatoes and dairy. She's grown out of both of them (is now almost 3).

My son (11 months) had this whenever he ate raw tomato or tomato sauce. It didn't bother him and now he gets it less frequently. If it does happen it goes away soon enough. I think it's just their immune systems getting used to things.

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 24/05/2009 20:00

My DS (8mths) gets all red and blotchy when he comes into contact with tomatoes, any tomato based sauce and smoked salmon. Yogurts don't agree with him either, he just brings them straight back up.

Took him to see Gp who was very unhelpful, wouldn't send him for tests and just said 'what will testing tell you? Only that he reacts to certain foods and you know which ones they are already.'

I did get him to prescribe me some liquid Piriton though and gor now we'll just avoid those foods which he reacts too and try him again when he's a bit older. He's also got what looks like eczema on his cheeks which we cover with Oilatum each evening.

unlikely they would allergy test so young, they'd just suggest keeping them away from it until they are a lot older, then making sure you try well cooked rather than raw tomato.

deleting · 24/05/2009 20:04

I get this and so do dcs. It doesn't bother them and goes quickly. Just go a bit blotchy round mouth.

AitchTwoOh · 24/05/2009 20:06

dd1 never liked tomatoes, but would try them every time to 'check' iykwim? memory like a goldfish. at around a year she developed the some rashiness around the mouth and my paed consultant pal said just to avoid offering her them, no biggie. she was fine with cooked toms except for that period, we didn't offer her cooked for a couple of months and everything was fine. she now says out loud that 'i DO NOT like uncooked tomatoes but i DO like cooked ones' to anyone who will listen...
i always wondered if they've always caused a tiny reaction and that's why she'd try them and then refuse, even prior to the rash.
PS you might find the same with aubergines, there's a relationship there i think.

BigBellasBeerBelly · 24/05/2009 20:18

My DD did this and I know it is quite common.

Tomato can be quite acidic, personally i think it irritates the skin which is why it goes red, rather than being a true allergy or even intolerance.

DD is nearly 2 and fine with them now.

ohdearwhatamess · 24/05/2009 20:33

Ds1 gets a rash on his cheeks if he eats tomato (cooked - he won't eat fresh ones). He seems to be growing out of it now at 3yo, and can tolerate small amounts. The .rash never seemed to bother him, but it looked awful.

I get eczema if I touch tomato flesh.

Jojay · 24/05/2009 20:36

It seems to be really common then. Thanks for your advice everyone. I think I'll steer clear of raw tomatoes for a bit, but we'll give cooked ones a go.
