skin prick testing

my daughter has a skin reaction (rash) when she has certain drinks, and sometimes with foods, generally those smothered in sauces.
the hospital have said they can skin prick test her if i can find something for them to test.
the only common ingrediant that i can see in the drinks that isnt a chemical is citric acid. she doesn't eat citrus fruits as she doesn't like them. could it be this that causes her reaction, has anyone experienced this?
would like thoughts before i put her through the skin prick tests, also what happens during skin prick tests etc

thank you

What happens in a skin-prick test is they put a drop of the suspected allergen on the skin of the inner forearm and then prick the skin through it with a small wire/pin. They may also do a control (pin prick through distilled water).

Then you wait 20 minutes or so, and look to see if the skin has reacted. A reaction is usually a small wheal measuring anything from a couple of mm across to a cm or more. This can be itchy.

Given that the pain involved is very minimal (literally a pinprick) and that knowing what you are allergic to is very useful I'd say go for it.

thank you,
that doesn't sound too bad for her and then we will hopefully know what is causing her probs so can avoid it.

agree with wb, skin prick tests are no big deal, they also give you an antihistamine to help with any reaction if there has been any.

I was really worried about DS having skin prick tests, but it really didn't bother him at all and he had loads of them, all over his back the first time and all up his arm the second time.

I had them to see which pollen I was allergic to. They did about 20 or 30 pinpricksup my arm. I don't remember it being at all uncomfortable.

I am the biggest wuss imaginable, and was terrified before my skin prick tests. They turned out to be nothing!
dd had them recently as well, she felt a slight prick, but not bad.

If you go to this website
www.bsaci.org/
It has a 'video' of someone having a skin prick test.
Hope it's useful.
