Ok - here is the e-mail that I sent to a well-known chocolate manufacturer:

Hello there - my 2 year old has just been diagnosed with a nut allergy. As a result I intend to do a lot more homebaking so that I can control the ingredients that go into the cakes and biscuits she eats. I was looking at your cooking chocolate and your chocolate chips and could see no information to indicate whether they are produced in a factory that also produces nuts or whether there was any danger of there being any nut traces in your products. She has been told to steer clear of ALL nuts so not just peanut.

I nearly bought your product and then thought that I would be wise to check with you directly. I would be really grateful if you could let me know.

Yours sincerely.

Below is the response I got from them:

Thank you for your e-mail and we would advise that our xx cooking chocolate and Chocolate Chips are nut free.

I can't make my mind up whether this is
a) response from someone who has obviously missed my point OR

b)(as my partner thinks) a definitive answer that should assure me that the chocolate is safe to use.

I'd love to hear what anyone else thinks!

i am pretty sure that to say nut free they have to be made in nut free factory, otherwise they have to say ';may be traces' to cover themselves
i#'d agree with your dp

hmm i think i would e-mail back again and just double check. ask specifically about factory conditions

I think that sounds fine. They are never going to guarantee that their product is safe (what if one of their workers accidentally dropped a fragment of nut into the mix? What if a nut was ground up in the cocoa cake they get from their suppliers?)

Thanks all - think I will actually go with this chocolate. Now I just have to find some good recipes!
