Am allergic to cats, going to a catty house this weekend - can I take Piriteze for the 2 days we'll be there?

DD is 4 months btw.

Thank you for any advice...

It says on my antihistamines, do not take while breastfeeding because it can pass into milk in small quantities BUT when I had DS (he was two days old) I was prescribed antihistamines because I was allergic to the medications they were giving me for something else and he had no side effects I noticed. So I think it's a suck it and see thing - the half life of some antihistamines is much lower than others - ie they are out of your system and therefore your daughters, much quicker than others. If you can go for something that you have to take more often then you can discontinue if you notice side effects in your child?

I take cetirizine (Zirtek, I think) on a daily basis and have done for over a year now. DS is 21 months and still BFing!

these people do a factsheet on antihistamines

Piriton is ok, you are supposed to check with your GP, it may make your baby drowsy, it's chlophenamine. Piriteze is citirizine and isn't recommended.
I think mostly this is beacause Piriton has been around for ages, and no real tests have been done on the newer, longer acting antihistamines. But also it's to do with how much can cross over, and whether the baby can process it properly.
Fairmidden, I guess your Dr has said it's ok though? and Zirtec is the same as Piriteze, so maybe there is new info?
I took Piriton through pregnancies and bf, but was always told to stick to chlorphenamine by Drs, and to be mindful of drowsiness.

My doctor is fine with it. As GPs and pharmacists aren't always up to date, the BFN drug factsheets and drugline are a great resource.

They are written by a pharmacist with an interest in breastfeeding and you can phone for more specific advice.

Link to antihistamines fact sheet which mentions all of these drugs
