Milk intolerance - is this a positive result? C'mon experts!!!!!!!!

Ok - so -

dd2 is 3 months and possesed by the colic demon. After many treatments, schemes, medications and so on, I have gone dairy free as she is bf. I have done 10 days of total non-dairy living.

So she seemed loads and loads better after 3 days. We figured this may be the dairy free mamma milk, but thought it was a bit quick tbh, so maybe coincidence and her age.

At wedding this weekend gone, so had 1 day doing dairy. Nothing dramatic, few sandwiches, 3 cups of tea and a slice of cake.

So today - 2 days later, she is starting to stiffen up, whine, loads of wind etc.

Is this a positive result for dairy intolerance, or have I not given it enough time and I'm reading too much into everything?

how old is she? DS2 hasn't really grown out of it, he can poo now (never ever thought i would have this conversation!!!) but i do have to watch what he eats. poor thing has only just finished his 1st easter egg!!

simpson · 28/04/2009 22:29

Bless him getting his first Easter Egg

She is 15mths.

TBH she only got really bad when I weaned her at 6mths and yogurt seemed to be the big culprit.

She has been dairy/soya free since she was 10mths but poos still not normal.

Awaiting results of celiac (sp) disease and other intolerances (I think she might have a slight problem with wheat)

My DS (3) has no problems and last week let DD finish the rest of his chocolate mousse
and the next day her nappies were horror film like

MerlinsBeard · 28/04/2009 22:38

lol @ horror film poo but you are absolutly right and teh screams and the look in their faces when you can't help them

sorry seem to have hijacked a wee bit

simpson · 28/04/2009 22:41

Yes oops for hijack!!

Oh well, will be back on tomorrow with what dietician says...

treedelivery · 29/04/2009 09:24

Noooo you must hijack!! I am learning loads!!

Particulary about how to work with the medical profession. If I get any shit I'll go private, I don't care what it costs [mutinous smiley face]
Good luck at dietician!

Ok just got back and have a few mins before I have to get DCs lunch then take DS to pre school.

Its all go here

Dietician basically said that lactose is the sugar found in milk.

Lactose intolerance is detected in stool sample (which DD had) which shows sugar in stools. But in order to do the test LO must be subjected to dairy for it to show up iyswim.

Casein intolerance is detected by blood tests and by elimination diet. Symptoms are hives, rash, asthma, diarrhea.

Some interesting facts she told me: if your ancestry is Northern European you only have 25% of having lactose intolerance if not then you have 75% chance

Also if your LO is dairy intolerant they have 50% chance of growing out of it by age 2

simpson · 29/04/2009 12:03

So advice of dietician is to try lacto free milk and see how you get on.

You may need to try things to eliminate them iyswim...

treedelivery · 29/04/2009 12:49

That is great! Thank you. I have the choose and book letter for the referral, so I'll see how long that is going to take. If it's a while, I will try lactose free.

Thats great and very kind of you, and the dietician! How did you and yours get on?

EachPeachPearMum · 29/04/2009 13:08

Hmm, so I did the skin test... nothing! At least it rules out allergy
All my siblings had a condition as children where they couldn't break down the fat in milk... cannot find anything when googling and I don't know the name of it... I am assuming this is different to lactose intolerance, and cmp intolerance.

EachPeachPearMum · 29/04/2009 13:10

simpson - the enzymes in the stomachs of people of differing heritages are different- eg many people of chinese heritage cannot process alcohol.

simpson · 29/04/2009 14:43

Eachpeachpearplum - that would make sense then

Treedelivery - we got on ok

Dietician just checking DD's daily diet to make sure she gets enough nutrients etc...

Her weight seems good too

No where near ready to try any dairy yet may not happen for another year or so...so she will be on neocate till then.

Although DD filled her nappy in the middle of appt so dietician got to look at her poo (sorry TMI) and agrees it is not normal....

We are still waiting for some test results back so will see what they show....

treedelivery · 29/04/2009 14:51

Oh bless her for doing that poo though! In my life that poo would have been the 1st normal one for weeks, or she would have done it just when we got outside!

We have our appointment in 2 weeks! OOer, its general paeds though so not expecting a great deal. Which is awful of me, but have met with so much 'fobbing off' I am now assuming the worst.

OP posts:
simpson · 29/04/2009 22:36

yes trust my DD to do massive poo in middle of appt

It was horrid but at least the hosp saw it iyswim...

You never know your appt may go well fingers X!!

MerlinsBeard · 30/04/2009 10:53
