5 Year old - Severe Hayfever

My DS has really bad hayfever, yesterday his eyes were swollen after picking him up from school and this morning barely open.! We are currently using Benadryl syrup, Rynacrom Nasal spray and Opticrom eyedrops.
We have also (in previous summers) tried Lotradine syrups, and Piriton but none seem to work. We have also tried local honey and other homoepathic remedies.

I am going back to the GP but I find it is best to go armed with information as the GPs tend to stick to the common ones above. Has anyone had any experience of really bad and resistant hayfever in a young child that can share any remedies? Thanks

Aw, it's miserable isn't it.

Telfast pills are the only thing that have worked for my ds, he's 11 but been using it a few years now.

I have perennial rhinitis which is hay fever all the year round and flixonase spray works for me but not sure if children can have it.

Thanks, I'll google the Telfast pills. Flioxonase is for over 18 yrs.

Thanks watsthestory, might buy the Flixonase and try it. Zirtek is the same active ingredient as Benadryl. Did the Flixonase work for your DC? I'e heard there is an injection this will be my next line of enquiry if all else fails.

My DD (older, she's 10) uses this and it is flipping fantastic. She uses it in conjunction with anti histamine and only had a couple of days where her hayfever bothered her compared to the year before when I nearly took her to hospital where her eyeballs became so swollen.

I use it as well and now don't need to take anything else most of the time where as I used to take anti histamine and beconase.

I'm not sure you can use it on a 5 year old so you would need to check. Have a google for it and you will find loads of people who have got on very well with it, I found out about it on moneysavingexpert.com a couple of years ago, there are threads on there. Also google medinose which is the same principle and read the feedback on there.

Sorry if I sound a bit over enthusiastic but I've had hayfever since I was 2 and it has transformed my summers and DD's too.

Get him drinking loads of red bush tea, it really makes a difference.

You can have it hot, cold, or (my personal favourite) with a bit of lemonade so it looks like pretend Pimms....

You can also use it as an alternative to stock in soups, stews, etc.

It is not a cure-all, but it really knocks the edge of (I used it in both pregnancies).

I used to get horrendous hayfever (to the extent that I was occasionally hospitalised with my eyes bulging out of my head); I was prescribed a steroid nasal spray which really helped.

Ds (4) has Neoclarityn (active ingredient is desloratadine) which seems to help. He started taking it in February this year which seems very early but it has made a difference.
