I am severely allergic to rats - had them as pets for several years until I finally had to give them up as I could not even go near the cage without becoming really unwell. Recently had another awful experience when we had (vermin) rats in the house and my asthma was chronic-severe for several months until we really got on top of the problem. I am just wondering whether it is likely then I will be allergic to other furry pets, specifically rodents (rabits, guinea pigs, etc). Just interested to hear of patterns on other people's allergies. Should I expect to react to other furry creatures in a similar way or to a similar degree or could it literally be a one-off sensitivity to rats only...? Aren't bodies weird??!

My daughter has a severe allergic reaction to horses for which she needs Epipen. Over the past few years she has also developed allergic reaction to cats, dogs and rabbits. We've had rabbits for years and she had no problem at first but now the reactions seem to be getting worse and set her asthma off almost instantly.
So I now assume that she may well react to all furry animals and carry antihistamines around just in case.

Ds is severely allergic to cats but seems to have no trouble with the nursery pets a hamster, rabbit and a guinea pig.

It is difficult to know. I would exercise some caution just in case.

My son is very sensitive to short haired dogs and cats but it is relatively fine with long hair breeds with the exception of maltese dogs (???). He seems fine so far (knocks on wood) with other animals.
