Nut allergy and possible holiday in Mexico

Hello,

My son (4) has a nut allergy - tree nuts and peanuts to a lesser degree. He is not one of those kids who walks by a bowl of peanuts and goes blue but he is definitely allergic and we carry epi-pens. We've travelled with him to Canada and the States before we found out he was allergic but nowhere else.

My grandfather has offered to pay for an all expenses family reunion. The current plan is Mexico, in the Mayan Rivieria, at an all inclusive resort. I don't know much about Mexican cuisine but I think this area is fairly touristy and international. However, I was a vegetarian for years and was always surprised by people who thought that if it just had chicken stock in that didn't count! So I'm well aware that just because a place is touristy doesn't mean it is allergy friendly.

My sister-in-law (who is allergic to tree nuts) has stayed in that area and said she actually had an allergic reaction while she was there. I also understand that the nearest hospital is hours away.

I'm really worried about this. Has anyone else had any experiences of this?

Thanks in advance!

Hi.
Well, not Mexico but...
We went to Italy a few years ago, DD1 is like your DS, was 15 yo at the time.
We are vegetarian too, makes nut allergy harder, I find!
Anyway, with the help of a friend who is Italian, I went armed with very detailed phrases explaining that she was allergic to nuts.
A kind neighbour (Italian, but English speaking) offered us some chocolates. I asked if they had nuts in. She checked the box and said no they didn't. DD ate the chocolate. It did have nuts - in the form of hazelnut paste, I suspect. She had a reaction...fortunately not bad enough to warrant hospital- but it was that that made us go back and get the epipen.
I think I have concluded from this that you can't rely on other people taking nut allergy seriously and/or understanding it properly.
I don't think that should deter you from going, but I think I would be reading the ingredients list myself.
