Itch relief tips anyone?

After two nights' broken sleep I still have a four year old upstairs in bed moaning and upset, partly due to a stinking cold but mostly due to terribly itchy rash caused by new washing powder (I think).

Any hot tips for making him feel better, beyond piriton, aqueous with calamine and regular shots of nurofen would be most appreciated!

Would normally say tepid baths but that is easier said than done if the weather is chilly and add bircarbonate of soda to the water. I have heard oats tied in cloth and added to the bath are good but havent tried that

Calpol Night and Calpol Cold both have an antihistamine in which is different to Piriton. I don't know for sure if it's ok to give with Piriton to a 4yo, as both can make them sleepy.
A fan helped mine when they had chickenpox.
Good luck

Thanks. I know piriton is fine for him as it was prescribed. Haven't got any calpol night or cold but might try some medised if it gets really bad tonight too... although i hear they don't give that to 4 yos anymore?

Yes, that's the same thing, I think it's under 2s that can't have it.
I have a regularly itchy 4yo, and I have given both together , I don't think it's recommended though as it "enhances the sedative effects" according to pharmacist.

you don't want to give two antihistamines together but piriton is short acting so something like Clarityn might be better at night. That was prescribed for mine when younger but it's a long time ago so I don't know what current recommendations are. I'd ask a pharmacist.

Thanks everyone. As it turned out I couldn't actually open the damn medised bottle when I needed it. And after that he slept through with less itching today.

Sounds as though your ds has improved a lot now but when my ds has had allergic reactions in the past which included itchy rashes, if piriton alone has not helped, I have often resorted to hyrdocortisone cream.

I know it is frowned upon but when ds is distressed, I think it is worth it- especially as it happens rarely, thank goodness.

Hope you manage to find a new soap powder.

Have you tried bathing him with oats in the bath? It's a super simple solution, but it has worked with my LO's itchiness.

You take a fistful of oats, put them in a muslin cloth, tie it with an elastic band, pop it in the bath, which will go milky. It's very soothing.
