Can anybody help? Is this hayfever?

Its actually for my sisters little boy who is nearly 3 and is having a hard time lately. He is allergic to eggs, has a suspected peanut allergy (his sisters allergic to peanuts), suffers regularly from asthma and now seems to have developed hayfever. He has always been a child who gets ill very easily, lots of chest infections, colds etc. He is now experiencing very red, sore and swollen eyes. He even wakes up in the morning complaining that his eyes are sore. Hes not sneezing anymore then normal and when my sister took him to the doctors today they told her just to give him piriton regularly, but that he was too young to have eye drops.
If anyone can offer any advice/experience that I can give to my sister that would be great. She is finding it hard to cope with him at the moment, he is very demanding and hardly eats much of anything which upsets her, so any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

give him a bath or shower and wash their hair after playing outside to get rid of the pollen.

Keep windows, doors and car sunroofs closed when there?s a high pollen count

Wearing sunglasses (the wraparound type are especially helpful)

avoiding smoking and smoke filled environments. Smoke irritates the lining of the nose and throat and can make symptoms worse.

vaseline around his nose to trap pollen and stop it entering the nostril

Sounds like hayfever to me. I have 2 children that suffer from it in different ways.

DS 13 has the puffy eyes, they are sore and the eyeballs become bloodshot. He dosen't have the sneezing, runny nose, or watery eyes, it looks like he has got 2 black swollen eyes-without the blackness. His is in the morning and late afternoon/evening when the pollen is rising and falling. But there are certain times when it is all day. Piriton is an amazing thing!

My other DS 10 has more itching and watery eyes, they do swell up slightly but no runny nose or sneezing. He got it for the first time last year, this year it seems to be worse already.

Would agree with all that DLI says.

Would he co-operate with an eye-bath? I find bathing with Optrex helps to get the pollen out and soothe my eyes when hay fever is very bad. An ioniser in his bedroom may help to cut the allergen burden at night. Poor little boy - hay fever is horrible.
