Help! DS is having an allergic reaction and I'm not quite sure what to do!

Had a spoonful of humus, and after 15 minutes started complaining (badly-which should be bad as he is not the complaining type) about his tummy , then he said he had problems breathing.

I have given him piriton, seemed a bit better but has now started scratching all around, he is covered in raised bumps all around the vomit and has just vomited.

He is allergic to nuts and peanuts (and many other things) but I think I'm far from needing an epipen (I have at home), doesn't seem bad enough for A&E but the piriton may have come out with the vomiting and considering that, unlike his other reactions, this time his face is not red and puffy although he looks a bit.. fat, I wonder if I may be missing something....

Any experience of this? can you have an anaphylaxis without a puffed face? well, I know, yes, but does this seems like I need to get more help?

My son is allergic to nuts and seeds.
Homous is made from seeds I think!
Get him somewhere he can get more help if needed.
His breathing needs to be monitored.

Katisha · 04/04/2009 12:56

I would go to A&E or in fact call ambulance actually

foxinsocks · 04/04/2009 12:57

how old is he? I would take him in

MeMySonAndI · 04/04/2009 12:58

HE seems to be breathing fine now, the raised dots are coming down although I'm not sure if they have or just joined together.

He is asking for something to eat but I'm not sure I should give him something, should I?

Yes take him to hosp and in the meantime give him more Piriton and have the Epipen at the ready.

Humoous is made from Seasame Seeds which are a common allergen to people with Nut allergies and just as serious. Breathing problems and Facial swelling is a pretty strong sign. Don't be afraid to use the Epipen. It buys you time.

MeMySonAndI · 04/04/2009 12:59

HI foxinsocks (chandra here), he is just 6.

The reaction is very different to the other ones he has had so I wonder if I am over reacting.

Ring NHS Direct and ask how to proceed? Someone should maybe look at him.

MeMySonAndI · 04/04/2009 13:01

He has been eating sesame as an ingredient he had a bit of humus this morning as I thought he would manage it now (tests last year negative to humous although he was allergic to it when he was younger)

OP posts:
drosophila · 04/04/2009 13:01

I wouldn't give him anything ot eat and I would like him seen by a professional. It does sound like it is receeding but it also sounds like it was pretty serious.

Piriton is pretty easily tolerated so I would give an extra dose just in case he vomited some of the original dose.

MeMySonAndI · 04/04/2009 13:01

test negative to sesame, not humous...

Just ring and get him seen asap. They won't tell you off or anything. Better to have it checked out.

foxinsocks · 04/04/2009 13:03

oh Chandra, how lovely to see you. I've been wondering for such a long time how you and your lovely son were doing! I didn't realise you'd name changed .

I would give him some more Piriton and take him to the out of hours doctors although I do tend to agree that if he isn't suffering too badly (and at that age, he can probably tell you), there isn't much more you can do.

My problem, in these circumstances, was always worrying that they would suddenly collapse i.e. that things were going on that weren't obvious from the outside so I would always seek further medical advice and if you don't have a quick or useful out of hours, it might be worth just getting someone at A&E to check him over.

drosophila · 04/04/2009 13:03

Could be the chick peas. My DS is allergic to both. Alos blood tests are inconclusive and you can develop reactions. Alos how has he taken seasame seeds in th epast. Were they raw or cooked or was it seasame oil?

MeMySonAndI · 04/04/2009 13:04

I gave him 2.5 ml piriton when he started complaining about the tummy, got another 5ml half an hour later and just before vomiting. I know that I'm far from giving him a dangerous does of piriton but he has had more than the recommended on the label (but vomited) should I try again?

He has also had the blue inhaler. Breathing seems fine but he is a bit drowsy... sh*t that doesn't sound good does it?

OP posts:
Katisha · 04/04/2009 13:05

Really I think you should get off Mumsnet and get him to out of hours or A&E.

foxinsocks · 04/04/2009 13:06

it might be the piriton making him drowsy but it might be the reaction so you'll need to take him in I think

I'd go to A&E if he's drowsy tbh just in case it is a pre cursor to him collapsing

hope it goes ok, let us know

mosschops30 · 04/04/2009 13:06

FFS dont ring NHS direct, they advise me to go to bed (whilst having an anaphylactic reaction) and see how I felt in the morning

Just take him to A&E, if he's ok then youve lost nothing but a few hours, if he's not ok, you need to be there not dicking about at home on MN

janestillhere · 04/04/2009 13:07

Go to A&E

MeMySonAndI · 04/04/2009 13:08

Katisha I work in the local hospital, I know that the possibility of him seeing a doctor with a minimal expertise of allergies at A&E is near to nil. Hence the questions here.

OP posts:
MeMySonAndI · 04/04/2009 13:09

OK off to the hospital

OP posts:
mosschops30 · 04/04/2009 13:10

clearly you dont work as a doctor or nurse or you would realise that asking MNers (no disrespect) is secondary to actual medical attention

Katisha · 04/04/2009 13:12

I'm not having a go - have asked questions on here myself. But its better to be on safe side. I also speak as a mother of DSs with allergies and have dithered about hospital visits with asthma in past as well.

MeMySonAndI · 04/04/2009 14:53

Thank you, we are just back from A&E. Ass expected DS was fine, he is still covered in a rash but fine. Had a good time playing with the oxigen monitor but everything's ok.

I understand what you mean about not being a doctor but I was not looking for a medical opinion but checking with those who have been there, that everything was still within the manageable-at-home range.

I think that most of us, mums of very allergic children know that although some reactions are in the strong side, it is not always necessary to run to A&E. (and also, are sadly aware, that we will end up explaining the nature of severe food allergies to the poor guy doing the check up as not much training in this area is provided... )

But hey ho, now we know that he has to stay away of humous despite his skin prick tests showing to be OK with sesame, which is not exactly good news but the good news is that accidental exposure is less likely now has gone back into the what to avoid list.

Thanks again.

Glad all is fine and that you were not in there the whole afternoon!

MeMySonAndI · 04/04/2009 15:07

Yes, surprisingly it was not that bad. They got us in in less than 10 minutes.

Thank you again
