DD is nearly 14mths and is severely intolerant to dairy and soya. She got incredibly constipated and has been on neocate since she was 10mths.

Things settled for a month or so and then her poos started to get more and more runny. It has now got so bad I am throwing 2 vests a day away as I cannot salvage them

I am not due to see pead or dietician for another 6wks. Pead a total w**ker TBH (looong story - and didn't believe she had any intolerances till it showed in stool sample )

So basically, would you keep feeding her what I am (have tried food diary BTW but can't figure anything out) till appt??

Or cut out wheat or gluten etc and limit her limited diet even more??

Also is there a blood test that can determine whether she has an intolerance to anything else??

She is putting weight on fine BTW

TIA

Anyone??

how about trying a dairy free probiotic? There is a blood test for coeliac but I think (check coeliac society website) it's not reliable so young. Bananas always constipated mine quite well. It seems a long time to be an infection.

Difficult to know what to suggest as she'll need to eat gluten if you want the blood test but avoiding it would give you more information (and possibly quick respite).

simpson · 26/03/2009 09:30

She eats 2 bananas a day and doesn't seem to make a difference to her poos they are still like water!!

Don't think she is in any pain though....

Am going to cut out wheat for 2 days and see what happens I think....

if you are going to cut it out there are lots of suggestions here for alternatives. Your local health food store should have wheat free pastas and major supermakets sell rice noodles. My family love buckwheat pancakes.

simpson · 26/03/2009 10:07

Thanks Tatt

She had an oat cake today instead of her normal wheat germ toast...

I hadn't thought of rice noodles....

The only thing i think I will find tough is the biscuit/bread stick alternative TBH.

If I don't notice any difference in 2 days I will start to give it to her again...although poo this morning was not quite as bad

it could take longer than a couple of days - although that is likely to give you an idea. However if it does seem better after 2 days it may continue to improve.

If she does have a problem with wheat it can cause secondary lactose intolerance that clears when the gut recovers. So if she's better wheat free you may want to try reintroducing dairy (cheese or live yoghurt before risking milk).

You can buy gluten free bread and pitta bread but if doing this long term a breadmaker is useful.

are you on neocate or neocate advance? my ds 2 was quite happy on neocate, at 1yo they changed him to neocate advance. started throwing up again badly. was told the formula was no different, believe me it was!! took him off neocate advance 3 weeks later straight onto goats milk, fine, no more sick. btw he is also severly intolerant to diary ( cow that it) even the slightest trace of cow protein will result in excema, any more and he throws up. he's 3 now and we're going for blood test results next week to see if he's coeliac as wel. hope this helps. x

simpson · 28/03/2009 12:28

Mallet - she is on normal neocate which I don't want changed as the odd child loves it!!

We have been wheat free for 3 days & I have noticed a big difference in her poo. Much smaller and more compact iyswim.

HV said to get true picture we need to go gluten free as well. Is this true??

I hope not as I am soooo restricted with what she can eat anyway

just a few thoughts...

I'm not sure what angle HV is coming from, is her poo sort of 'normalising' now? If it is I'd be hopeful that it is a wheat intolerance rather than a gluten issue.

I wonder if substituting wheat mainly with barley/ rye flours (and some oats) would give you clearer picture. Surely cutting out gluten completely now would just leave you more confused as to whether it is a wheat intolerance or gluten issue, and make a coeliac blood test unreliable.

I would also ask your GP for a different paediatrician - we did and it made all the difference.

simpson · 31/03/2009 21:31

Well the plot thickens....

DD was wheat free for approx 6 days and initially her poos got better but then they went back to being very runny again

so either there is an intolerance to something else or it could be toddler diarrea (sp)

With TD I have read that fructose can make it worse and I have to say if DD has eaten a jelly for pudding in the evening her poo is even more foul in the morning....

hmmm, interesting...

just checking - when you say better then runny, it never got near to being constipated did it? Although I think you know all about this from reading above .

I think jelly can have an interesting effect on many children's poo, especially if it is alot or highly coloured. How is she with fruit and sweet drinks etc?

Did you suddenly up the gluten intake at all - eg barley juices or rye/barley bread or even porridge/flapjack - just to hopefully rule it out. Or the lactose. Could she have caught a bug or virus or eaten something dodgy - is it still runny after several days?

simpson · 01/04/2009 18:34

No she was never constipated at all...no where near TBH.

I really do think jelly might be the culprit which if she does have toddler diarrea (sp)I have heard that fructose can have this affect.

She seems to be ok on fruit though and only drinks milk or water...

TBH the runny poo has got a lot worse since she has started to feed herself chunks of food etc and refused to be spoon fed which has happened in the last 4wks.

She was having wheat germ bread but I have cut this out lately. Although not sure if that has halped at all....

God...it could be anything Am back at hosp on 7th so will see what they say...
