IgE always over 650!?!?!

Hi
my son's IgE has always been over 650 for the last 4 years (the year's we've been measuring). He's on constant antihistamine and tests always show massive reaction to treenut allergens but nothing else - should I be pestering to see why else his IgE is so high or is this the norm for allergic children? Any ideas?

when do they measure it? My child had skin prick tests and then a total IgE and it was over 2000. Just meant I decided they'd never have a skin prick test for peanut again.

Why is he always on antihistamine? Skin prick tests won't work properly if antihistamine is taken in the 2 days before the tests (some say longer). As antihistamine can mask serious reactions we were told not to use it regularly.

My DD's IgE was 3600, 10 years ago when she was 14. She has never been tested since, she'd really like to be eating nuts again, GP says no benefit in retesting her

I feel that if you can grow out of being coeliac like my nephew, she could just grow out of her nut allergy, as because of the high IgE, they did not test further for specific triggers.

Alibubbles - you cannot grow out of Coeliac Disease.

One would think not as it is an auto immune disease. This is just personal expereince of a family member. My nephew was diagnosed at less than 2 years old, after failure to thrive, bloating, foul stools, all the usual symptoms, he has had several biopsies done over the years, and when he was 22 it was suggested that he try a 'normal' diet to see how he got on. He had become fed up with an exclusion diet, he fund it difficult when he went to uni and left home. Tt has been two steps forward and one back, but under the guidance of a naturopath he is no longer on a gluten free diet.

His latest biopsy shows no proof of coeliac, unlike many before. He is now 28.

Hi All, I went today to our immunologist with our son and was told to not pay too much attention to the IgE and the RAST because it is known to give off false positives and negatives depending on what condition the person is in at the time. ie colds, flu, been working too hard, playing sport just before,....
RAST is not guarantee of anaphylaxis just a rough sort of indicator for the potential to go into anaphylaxis when in contact with whatever the person may be allergic to.

Thanks, (sorry for late switch on again). Wow 3000! That's high! So I got concerned because, though it seems like we've got his allergies under control, it's now his consultant that's worried about it.

My son is on a low antihistamine (desloratadine) because he's had so many anaphylatic reactions. We don't do scratch tests because they would not react due to the anti-histamine. All IgE scores are from bloods. And I'm happy to assume some RASTs are False/positives because I can see where they fall off my son's normal RAST scores, but the IgE is always so high.

anyway - we're in hand - not had to use the epi-pen for a year now so I should just cheer up and get on it with!!!!
