Egg allergy and MMR jag...

HV and nurse at Gp surgery say since LO has only had a minor reaction to egg, that we can let him have MMR jag but make sure we mention his egg allergy.

I have heard other babies are taken to childrens hospital but nurse says only in very severe cases of egg allergy since MMR innoculation is cultivated in egg albumen.

Anyone got any advice on this? Relatives are split on situation saying he has only had one severe ish reaction to eggs and didnt end up in hospital but I have also heard cases where the child has a mild reaction the first time they are exposed only to be followed by severe reaction the next time they have egg...

Help please

My experience with DS (anaphylactic to milk, severely allergic to eggs) is that he had no problem at all with the MMR. In fact the paediatrician was happy to let him have the jab at our local surgery, it was only because the nurse threw a wobbly and refused to give it to him (even though I insisted!) that I had to take a day off work and trawl along to the local hospital for him to have the jab, then wait on the ward for 3 hours afterwards - all totally pointless, he was perfectly fine!

In fact if you google it, there's a study out there (done partly by my paed!) that suggests you're more likely to be allergic to the gelatine they use in the jab than the egg.

Hope that helps you decide... or have I opened up another can of worms...

In your gp surgery they will have adrenaline to use if necessary. Even in a severe reaction that is usually enough, although he would be taken to hospital if he reacted. As the last poster said severe reactions are very unlikely.

No, that is brilliant news. I just don't have a lot of people in RL to ask these things without them either being way too relaxed or way too over anxious. It is great to get on Mumsnet and talk to people who have 1st hand experience. The nurse did say he should be fine and it's only really severe cases they send to the hospital but I just wanna get advice from people who have actually been through with it themselves

So thanks - I feel much better now.

My ds1 also has an egg allergy, but was fine with the MMR. The consultant allergist he is under wrote to the GP to say it was fine and then he went to the GP surgery to have it. If you look up current nhs advice about it, they do now say that mmr is fine for egg allergic children (even with anaphylaxis).

DD1 had an egg allergy so had to have her MMR in hosp and be monitored for a short while after it - agree with Mumfie all completely pointless and a waste of time but I suppose better to be safe than sorry where a wee one is concerned

btw, she's nearly 6 now and seems to have grown out of it too

My DD has egg allergy and specialist told me it was fine for her to have MMR at dr surgery. We did and she was fine.

Ds has egg allergy and had MMR in hospital with no reaction at all. Consultant did say a reaction was extremely unlikely but they were just playing safe. After the event it did seem abit pointless.

My brother and I couldn't have our jabs because we were allergic to eggs but when I mentioned it when Tink had her first (I was worried in case she had my allergy as she has some of mine and as it was pre-weaning we wouldn't know) and they said eggs aren't used anymore so she would be fine.
