tomato allergy?

my ds1 had a strange reaction to eating pasta with tomato and cream sauce - his face went bright red and then developed itchy 'hives' like a large nettle rash. it went after a couple of hours. he eats wheat and dairy all the time so i can only think it must have been the cooked tomatoes although he has eaten them lots of times before. he is 3 and 4 months. just wondered if anyone else has had a similar experience and what they did?

my DD3 reacts to certain tomatoey stuff, but tis not an allergy, tis due to how acidic that certain brand of sauce is.

main brands tend to be fine, but the cheaper brands make her come up in welts.

not disregarding allergy possibility at all, but it might not be so don;t panic yet

ok thanks psycho- i normally buy organic tinned toms but this was a pretty strong sauce as made for a pizza topping. i shan't panic - try not to live up to my name...

oh, don;t fret about it not being organic........I cannot afford to buy all my food organic.

I do find however that the 'value' and 'discount' brands react with her skin tho, so there must be some reason why.

and BTW, I am not my name either

worrymummy · 05/03/2009 22:46

it's a good name though - esp if you are a mum of 5!

Also, my allergy doctor (I have 2 DSs who are allergic to things) said that tomatoes can contain lots of histamine which causes hives (nothing to do with an allergy to tomatoes though) - he suggested putting Vaseline on their faces before they eat tomatoey things. It works!

thanks mollymawk that's interesting...do you know whether this can strike at any time?

I don't know really - I think it may depend on the particular tomatoes, tbh! DS2 got it worst when he stared eating his pasta by himself (and thus smearing sauce all over his face...)

MintChocAddict · 06/03/2009 23:31

My DS has this too. Tomato is part of the deadly nightshade group of plants and the hives are caused by direct contact with the skin. Often tomato that hasn't been cooked (e.g. cherry tomatoes and their seeds) can cause more of an effect on the skin but think it differs from child to child. Have heard that in many cases they grow out of it so fingers crossed.

DS1 won't eat raw tomatoes anymore, it's very hard to get him to eat anything 'saucy'(very fussy). he had a bit of pizza tonight and looked fine but then started scratching his face - but there was nothing visible like last time. Apparently piriton can help? well thanks for your comments, let's hope it doesn't last...x
