Wheat alergy?

Every time my 9 month old eats bread, the following day she will have tummy ache and a few really nasty nappies. Could it be an intolerance or just too much wheat for her little tummy?

My DD had this, but via my breast milk from early on.

The good news is, that after being terrified of giving her any wheat/gluten for ages, we gave her bread at 22 months and haven't looked back. It's a common temporary intolerance.

DD had GF bread from the Tesco Free From range and rice krispies for breakfast, and we had to be careful about stock cubes, etc. It was a real PITA, but made her diet a lot healthier as biscuits were no no. Lots of fruit bars, etc.

are you giving her white or wholemeal?

young babies can't take too much fibre so white bread is recommended.

Have you noticed whether things like pasta have the same effect? and has her weight gain been OK since she was weaned onto solids? It might be coeliac disease or just a temporary intolerance as hobnob says

hobnob, you gave me some advice a wee while agao on a thread about gluten getting through in my milk. Since I am back on my gluten free diet, my DS has been fine, but I had a lapse last weeks and he had a really bad tummy for a few days . It seems to be the cause of his discomfort and the GP has recommended no gluten for him until at least a year and then we will do a trial and see what happens. He has a 20% chance of coeliac disease since I have it.

That's great that the GF diet is having results for your DS, but I don't envy you 'cos I hated it! I just found it so hard to 'fill up' with my ravenous BF appetite! Peanut butter seemed to be the answer for me (sod the other health advice...!) FIngers crossed it's just a temporary thing. I've just loved being able to leave the house without spare meals in bags on the offchance that we won't be home for lunch.

It's still not clear if DS is reacting to the gluten or your antibodies to gluten, is it? I suppose you'll find out by trial and error when he starts solids. I wasn't brave enough!

It's mostly wholemeal bread so it could just be too much fibre. There doesn't seem to be any intolerance to things like pasta, although it is difficult to tell as she just tends to spit that out.

Weight gain fine (although not sure I have had her weighed in last 2 months - perhaps visit to health centre in order!)

Try swapping to white bread and see what happens CGI . I hope for your DD's sake that it's just too much fibre.

thanks hobnob....no not sure if it's me or him, but as you say, we'll find out when he is weaned! I'm kind of used to the GF diet now, so it doesn't bother me, but it must be harder for kids!

Thanks for the advice. I hope so too. I can't imagine what a nightmare a GF diet must be for a baby!
