Dairy free - what treats can I have???

Hi all,

I'm going dairy-free tomorrow in the hope it helps my 16 week old DD who has reflux. Can anyone give me tips on products that I CAN eat, particularly "treats" to replace the copious amounts of chocolate bars, brownies and muffins etc etc that I get through while BFing??? I am vegetarian but eat fish. Many thanks.

Hi Honey....My son is dairy-free & you can get great things from health food stores, the smaller ones are better, all the treats or everyday foods. Hope you find what your looking for xx

BusyBeeWithThree · 24/02/2009 15:21

Macaroons...

KashaSarrasin · 24/02/2009 15:27

Honey - I'm vegan, some of my favourite sins are:

  • Fry's chocolate cream bars
  • Vegan white chocolate from the health food shop
  • Swedish glace non-dairy "ice cream" - our local Sainsbury's stocks it, but only vanilla and chocolate, local health food shop has the more interesting flavours
  • lots of non-dairy cake / dessert recipes online - have a look here www.veganfamily.co.uk/cakes.html - or if you're still eating eggs you can probably just use non-dairy margarine (Pure is good) and adapt normal recipes.

Oh, and they're not vegan because of the egg, but Jaffa cakes have no milk products in them (90% sure).

hth

loobeylou · 24/02/2009 18:05

lots of stuff in supermarkets free from section - from choc chip muffins to bakewell tarts, fruit pies, jaffa cakes, mrs crimbles macaroons are nice

sorbet is usually DF, the swedish glace vanilla ice cream is also lovely, very creamy tasting

lots of biscuits are DF anyway, certainly many digestives and "plain" biscuits are

custard or rice pudding made with soy/rice milk

all homemade baking made with DF marge eg Pure sunflower marg of Vitalite

loobeylou · 24/02/2009 18:06

should say OR vitalite, not of

BananaSkin · 24/02/2009 18:14

Popcorn, toast and something that isn't butter, cashew nuts, flapjack made with dairy free butter. Er - not a lot

BananaSkin · 24/02/2009 18:14

Actually, any cake or biscuits made with sunflower oil fat

Honeymoonmummy · 24/02/2009 18:20

Thanks for your responses guys. Actually Loobeylou, digestives say on the packet "contain dairy" - I checked myself in the supermarket before I read the post - sorry!
Hob nobs are OK though apparently thank god!

honeymoonmoney - we have two members of our fruit and veg thread who are vegan/dairy free who will happily bore you give you some good pointers..I'll go and poke them and point them in this direction

earlyriser · 24/02/2009 18:24

Google vegan sticky toffee pudding', can't remember the website, but OMG it is goooooood!!'

MissAnthrope · 24/02/2009 18:26

Get thee to a Holland and Barratt (or buy online) for Nanas cookies - even the choc chip ones are vegan and they are delicious.

There's a really good range of dairy free stuff in the supermarket these days

earlyriser · 24/02/2009 18:28

Oh, coop digestives and rich tea are vegan as are most value ranges, and they taste fine too. Green and Blacks chocolate, especially maya gold yum. Mind you, i found i had to give up all chocolate when breastfeeding as it seemed to upset my ds, along with citrus, coffee, windy veg etc etc (not much fun when vegan too!)

earlyriser · 24/02/2009 18:30

Alpro soya yoghurts (plain and flavoured) in most supermarkets. really must think about everything before i hit post!

Honeymoonmummy · 24/02/2009 18:32

I read about Maya Gold Earlyriser and I've just checked the packet in tesco and it contains dairy?

Point away Mollyringer!

Bountys are dairy free, I think

You can bake biscuits and cakes without dairy. I have recipes if you need any. Also look on parsely soup website.

earlyriser · 24/02/2009 18:56

it says 'may contain dairy' this means that there will be products containing dairy made on the same factory line, but the line will be cleaned thoroughly between batches, they say 'may contain...' to cover their backs for people with life threatening dairy allergies, but it is unlikely that it will contain any significant amount of dairy! Hope this helps. if you'd rather avoid, then try and source some kinnerton choc as that is made in a dairy free factory! HTH

earlyriser · 24/02/2009 19:02

Actually, i've just checked and can't find that anywhere on my packet, just says suitable for vegs and vegans. Plain choc bounties aren't suitable for vegans but don't know if this is due to dairy or egg.

i hope elimination helps, it made a big difference to my ds, and although it was worth it, it was hard work trying to get lots of calories from a limited diet (nuts made his reflux worse too). Take heart from the fact it does get easier when they are on to solids. good luck.

tatt · 24/02/2009 19:24

Sainsburys Kinnerton chocolate or Jaffa cakes, most bourbon biscuits, plain chocolate digestive from Liddl. Good luck.

I didn't know Mars confectionery is not vegetarian. Obviously much of it has milk in it but other animal products? I had no idea. Bountys are off the list then. I was sure they used to be vegan! Oh well.

lilQuidditchKel · 24/02/2009 19:33

bowls of sweet cereal with rice milk? good luck, my DS had to be dairy free for 6 weeks and it was so hard!

ellceeell · 24/02/2009 19:46

order some treats from here? www.veganstore.co.uk/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=1&Category_Code=510

Honeymoonmummy · 24/02/2009 20:00

Great link Ellceeell -I haven't had marshmallows since I went veggie!!

Thanks all for the advice, I really appreciate it!

Earlyriser, which nuts? I'm off the peanuts anyway while bf ing, but have just bought some pistachios as a snack...

Have done Honey - one has already been on, I see!
Trouble is, some of them might start recommending parsnips chips baked in quinoa coating as a treat.

CantSleepWontSleep · 24/02/2009 20:25

Just to clarify on the Green and Blacks. It used to be dairy free, so if you have old stock you are safe (at least with just a 'may contain'). Recently the recipe has changed, and milk is now actually listed as an ingredient, so it is off limits.

'Divine' dark choc is fine though, as it the lindt one.
