With this history, when to introduce nuts to DD2?

I know that guidance keeps changing and I've lost track.

DH is severely allergic to peanuts and tree nuts. Had anaphylaxis at age 17, carries Epipen.

We thought DD1 was allergic to bee stings (odd reaction when she was 2) and she had excema as a baby. Hence avoided giving her nuts on medical advice until she was five.

Since then, we've managed to get blood tests for DD1, which came back negative for allergy to bee stings, peanuts and a range of tree nuts. We're now introducing nuts into her diet. So far, she's had hazelnut, almond and peanut butter, and been fine. So far so good!

The question arises, when do we introduce nuts to DD2? She's 3.5 now. There's no prospect of getting blood tests done - we got them on the back of DD1's bee sting reaction. Do we need to wait until she's five, as we were advised before, or could we introduce them now, carefully? She starts school in Sept, so part of me would like to get it over with and know where we stand!

To be honest I don't think it will make much difference as allergies can appear at any time and nobody really knows why.
My DH has a lot of allergies including brazil nut and I have hayfever and excema etc
There was no guidance when DS 13 was little and his tree nut, peanut and seed allergies didn't appear until he was nearly 5, although I suspect he had a problem with seseme seeds before that. We have never restricted nuts for DD 11 and she has never shown any sign of allergies at all.

no sign of any atopic disease?

you inherit the abilty to be allergic to food, not the same allergies....( although peanut is common )and as its the childrens father there is a slightly less chance of the children developing the allergies.
esp if mother is free of atopic disease.

if no ezcema asthma etc, just treat them as normal when it comes to food.

i have four children , and only one has food allergies.

I'm allergic. Before introducing possible allergens to DD, I dosed antihistamine medication & put it on the table. Then touched a bit to her hand. If all good after 5 mins, touched it to her mouth. If all good after 5 mins, put a small piece in her mouth.

Fortunately, she didn't need the antihistamine. But if she did, I would have administered it in seconds.

coteDAsur, you did this with all food?

No, no signs of any allergy - no excema, no asthma. Disgustingly healthy in general.

It would certainly be easier to go through the introduction process for both children at once. It's a bit complicated, on account of DH's allergy being so sensitive that we have to go out of the house to do it. But it will make parties etc a lot easier if we know we don't have to give either of them special diets.

williamsmummy - No, not with all food. Only possible allergens - tomato, strawberries, fish, nuts, etc.

Dh has peanut and other nut allergy and also asthma.

I bf both boys exclusively (which is supposed to help) and kept them nut-free for many years.

We introduced nuts to both at the same time when they were about 5 and 3.5. Fortunately neither of them show signs of any allergies.

Interestingly though, neither of them like nuts. They don't mind a few in a cake, but generally avoid chocolates with nuts in, and don't eat nuts on their own, and hate the smell of peanut butter. In most other areas they are scarily unfussy, so this is quite striking.

We have a basically nut-free house anyway because of dh, but it's so much better being relaxed about their eating out of the house.
