Urticaria often happens during or after a viral illness, particularly in children, hence the fever with it.
It is usually self-limiting, but can be horribly itchy and an antihistamine can help.
You might find this site useful.
Do not fret - I do not think that the MIL's lip stick is to blame, LOL .

Hope he is better soon.

Give paracetamol/calpol. that will help reduce his temperature. you can give paracetamol and ibuprofen at the same time. Give him some piriton or other child suitable antihistamine you have available.
try and stop him scratching.
have you got an suitable cream?
piriton should help the hives.
Is his breathing ok?
Think a trip to the GP may be in order tomorrow...

I know it sounds silly, but is his actual skin temperature cold or is he 'normal'? I get urticaria when I'm cold. Had loads of tests, but it is not an allergic reaction, it eventually gives me a temperature.
Im sure others will give you more detailed answers than I can...

charlotteolivia,
Does this describe you?
No, not allergy, and rather often is not allergic in nature.

morningsun · 12/02/2009 22:29

agree urticaria often comes with viruses
but if its extensive,or causes swollen lips and eyes or tongue/throat,seek medical help
its fluid under the skin as part of an allergic reaction and is called urticaria under the skin and angioedema under mucous membranes [lips mouth etc]

charlotteolivia · 12/02/2009 22:34

(apologies for hijacking..)
mummyfor3 - it has been diagnosed as acute idiopathic urticaria.
Thought to be food related at first, then I realised it was when I was cold. has started to happen when I'm too hot though now as well, so yes, your link was spot on!

bumbly · 12/02/2009 22:45

skin felt warm not cold

all veyr odd

bretahing normal and acts norma;

gave neurofen but all very odd

trying to think of trigger

OP posts:
morningsun · 12/02/2009 23:20

it can also be triggered by foods but the important thing is if its very extensive,or affects tongue lips or mouth seek medical help as can develop into airways obstruction
