Allergy to Marmite

Has anyone's child got an allergy to Marmite?

I am trying to work out if my DS aged 2yr 9mth has it.

He recently started getting pimple type spots on his legs, I took him to the pharmacist who thought it was contact dermatitis (i.e not sure what it really was) - but we could not explain why as nothing had really changed. Yesterday he came back from nursery with a rash around his mouth - the room manager advised it came up after eating Marmite.

Last night he had a bad nights sleep with a nightmare he occasionally gets (about a naughty bag?)and seems slightly unwell and moany. This happened last Wednesday night too.

Recently he has taken a shine to Marmite and I am now wondering if there is a direct correlation between eating this and the spots (they come up without the dreams too), nightmare and feeling unwell?

I dont know if i am grasping at straws or if this might be the cause. I am going to stop him eating Marmite to see if it helps, but wondered if anyone else had a similar experience?

I would really appreciate your help
Thanks

It could be an allergy to yeast, I had a friend at college who was allergic to yeast.

i did wonder that but he has been ok with bread - at least i think he has - but i might keep an eye on that just incase - thank you

I think your son needs to get checked out for mild ezcema on his legs.

As for marmite, LOTS of children can get a rash from that product, and bovril.

skin around mouth can be irritated from the salt content .

Or, a hivey , red rash could be a cause of the yeast extract itself, as its high in histamine.
Some people have a lot of histmaine in skin, and some may have the classic food allergies.

Pre-school children grow out of this , but simple avoidance of it would be sensible.

I dont think that its connected to bread. Or that your child has classic food allergies.

good luck!

I was (possibly still am) allergic to marmite as a child, but I got migraine. Childhood migraine can be a feeling of unwell rather than headaches.

ahhhhhhhhhhh! migraines, thats vasoactive amines, bet you have to avoid other products like strong blue cheese, and cola !

just in the middle of getting those out of my sons diet!!

My 15month old son suddenly started getting red spots on his stomach which then spread to red patches and welts all over his body and I mean head to toe. |It was diagnosed as Hives and piriton advised as treatment, very horrid to look at and alot of sleepless nights. No idea what caused it, although he had his MMR 17 days earlier so we thought it could be a reaction to the drugs.

Five days later and almost gone and he suddenly starts up with spots again all over his face and arms and now appearing on his torso. Have racked my brains to think what could he have eaten on both occasions and the only thing I can come up with is Marmite. Has anyone got any advice re this, i.e. is it likely and does this mean he is now allergic to bread, as not shown any symptoms before this. Any other treatment recommendations either?

Would love any advice, am going mad trying to locate what has caused this.

Thanks....
Angie

Thats interesting, thanks pixieonaleaf for bringing that up. I should have noticed celery is in it. My dd has been eating marmite and I know she is slightly celery allergic. Not badly mind, just mild and they reckon she can still eat it ok, however, she has recently had a few minor reactions after eating marmite. Was thinking of the yeast and had not looked at the ingredient content recently to piece the celery thing. That is probably whats doing it to her then. Has so many allergies all the time to things that slipped by me Blush

My husband and SS both have psorarisis affected by yeast. One from too much and one from too little. So yes Marmite is sometimes an issue
