Vomiting on Neocate - anybody else had this problem?

I'm trying to wean my ds2 onto Neocate from breastfeeding. He has a severe dairy allergy to the point of anaphylaxis and other hypoallergenic formulas (nutramigen, cow & gate pepti) also give him a reaction. Now, I know it is not possible for him to be allergic to Neocate since it has no proteins in for his body to react to but he regularly throws up when he has it. He doesn't have this problem with EBM so I know its not the flow of the bottle being too fast or anything like that. Has anyone else had this problem with Neocate and do you have any suggestions as to how I can prevent it? Many thanks for any help!

Bumping for you.

trixymalixy · 29/01/2009 10:41

What a nightmare for you!!

I'm afraid it's possible to be allergic to anything.

Neocate is less likely to cause allergic reactions, not completely allergic reaction free.

Iirc, it contains safflower oil whch you can have an allergic reaction to.

What age is your DS? Do you have to give up breastfeeding him?

You need to get back to your GP/allergy specialist to have him skin prick tsted with neocate.

My eldest dd was on neocate for almost 3 yrs and was tube fed it she was also often sick but tollerated it better than anything else so we had to stick to it until she could eat.
Things that helped were thickening the feed can't remember the name of the thickener sorry. Also giving smaller amounts (little but often).
It's so frustrating when you've tried almost everything and when they don't seem to be gaining weight you're desperate for them to keep it down.We found with our daughter that it made her have the runs almost after each feed too.
We ended up in hospital with the doctors scratching their heads for 6 months but never found anything 'better' than the neocate.
The good news is my dd is now 6 and can even eat dairy without too many problems.I too was unable to eat dairy(amongst other things) as a child and had severe eczema but I also grew out of it.

Thanks. My ds is 8.5 months and although I suppose I could breastfeed him for longer, I would really like to start getting him onto bottles with the aim of stopping BF within the next couple of months. This is mainly because I am trying to go back to work and finding it difficult to combine BF and work and also I am now finding breastfeeding really exhausting and this I'm pretty sure this is affecting my milk supply. He does seem to be OK with it mixed into food, just not when used as a drink do you think he would get enough in the day if I just tried to incorporate it all into his meals?

trixymalixy · 29/01/2009 11:35

I bf my DS until he was nearly 2 because he woudn't take any formula.

When i went back to work when he was 12 months I just bf him morning and before bed and he had rice milk during the day.

Your DS will obviously need more than that as he's a bit younger, but he would probably be fine if you got him down to morning and night bfs and tried to incorporate neocate into his meals.

I was desperate to stop bfing as well as i found it exhausting, but once we were down to 2 a day it was much less exhausting than making up bottles would have been!!

Academicmum · 29/01/2009 11:47

OK, I think I will consider that. He is a bit underweight at the moment (0.4th centile) and this makes me very nervous to reduce his breastfeeds any more so he's currently having around 5-6 in 24 hours which means I tend to feel like I'm permanently feeding him (either breastfeeds or solids). On the other hand because the neocate makes him sick that also makes me worry about his weight/intake etc. I hate dairy allergy!

It's awful isn't it.

Once your DS is more established onto solids thinkgs'll become easier.

Thanks again.

Hiya I have been giving my ds, 4 month old dairy allergic neocate for a week now, (pepti jr didnt help him) his allergy symptoms seem to have been relieved but he still gets the odd colic moment where he is in lots of discomfort, really windy and it smells rank . Does this settle down? or is this the best im gonna get?

eandz · 01/02/2009 23:37

hi academicmom
i'm having similar problems with nutramigen. i've been lying to my post natal thread and have said it's getting slightly better so that i don't feel like i'm constantly complaining. they have told me that my son has a cow milk protein intolerance as well as severe reflux. (i don't know how they can be so sure, they refuse to give him a rast test and really check for anything) besides his urine for utis? i've been in and out of the hospital all week and this week looks no different.

are you able to put him down, is he sleeping? my son is vomiting exorcist style after every single feed. my son won't be put down for even a moment. i've hitched an amby nest at an incredibly high incline using fishing wire through the netting and the little crossbar.

i'll be at the doctors tomorrow, but i doubt they'll say anything. will you be seeing a doctor soon as well?

trixymalixy · 02/02/2009 13:13

eandz, can you ask to try neocate instead of Nutramigen?

Nutramigen is still made from cow's milk and my DS and I've heard of other DCs on here being allergic to Nutramigen.

eandz · 02/02/2009 17:13

I was supposed to be at the hospital today at 2pm to see a specialist, but because of the stupid snow they canceled our appointment.

they have told me to try nutramigen if nothing improved in three days to try pregestimil, but thats not helping in any way either.

i will ask for neocate this time. any suggestions on what i can do until i get another formula?

trixymalixy · 02/02/2009 20:35

What age is he eandz?

I'm assuming he's quite wee still?

I'm afraid i bf my DS,so don't have any other suggestion apart from asking your GP to presribe it or going and buying some neocate yourself. It's expensive though.

eandz · 02/02/2009 22:06

trixy
he's 21 weeks old. so 5 months this week. i don't care what i have to do to keep him from crying.

i'll start calling around a midnight pharmacy. hopefully someone will have it.

Hi my son was fine on neocate but when he was moved onto neocate advanced ( at 1 yo) he was immediatly sick again. which one are you on? I moved him off it and to goats milk which he was fine on, no vomitting, excema etc.
hope this helps

eandz · 04/02/2009 21:23

we're just using pregestimil.

our appointment for monday was canceled because of the snow. i've been going to the gp daily but really that does nothing. he's not getting any better but there still isn't any green in his vomit so they aren't too worried. he won't sleep properly (unless I'm wearing him in the sling).

i will ask for neocate whenever the specialist plans on seeing us, but that could be never. i had a private consultant appointment too, but it was canceled as well. (that was today).

Hi,

My 6 months old daughter has gone through the same situation.

When a baby has severe diarrhea, vomiting, etc... the digestive system is constantly under a lot of stress. The diarrhea washes away the ennzymes that allow them to digest (break down lactose) and also impact their capability to digest all other food. The digestive systems needs a break, a rest... most babies after months and in some cases years are able to go back to dairy products and that is due to the digestive system rebuilding those enzymes.

Your doctor was right to prescribe Neocate.
Although it may seem your baby is reacting badly to it, Neocate is the most elemental formula you can get, it is fully-digested, therefore your babies body will absorb all the nutrients without needing to digest it. This will give the digesting system a break and time to regenerate the enzymes that were lost.
If your baby is vomiting Neocate, like mine does... try feeding more often small quantities, also stopping and burping quiet often as it tends to build up a lof of gas (this is all due to their digestive system still being so fragil). Do not move to NUTRAMIGEN, that is a partially-digested milk. Even less to Cow&Gate, Soya, or SMA LF formula... these are all non-digested formulas... and would demand too much from your babies digestive system. When I switched to SMA LF... Wow, big mistake she went back into diarrhea and this time acid poos, that gave her open wounds in her bum and a very painful rash, she would cry and scream to pass every single poo (at times only 2 minutes apart). Keep with Neocate for now.
For the constipation, we give our little one a 100mls of pure water at around 6am, and it seems to work... she would poo sometime between 7am and 10am. Also do not use the full strentgh, maybe one scoop less (for the same 210mls bottle), this will also help with the constipation. For the taste that is terrible, we are boiling the watter and when colling it we add a vanilla pod, we then remove the pod before the feeding. It improves a lot the taste.
Wish you the best of luck! I know exactly what you are going through!

barnsleybelle · 16/04/2010 20:33

My DD now 2.5 was on neocate for her dairy allergy, she did still vomit occasionally but the hives disappeared so it didn't seem she was actually allergic to it.
She was however diagnosed also with gastric reflux which caused the vomiting.
She was prescribed gaviscon which improved things no end.

ruzenka · 19/08/2010 22:26

Hello.
My baby is also on neocate. She really don't like the taste of it. Sometimes she will only drink 80ml insread of 210ml. But I beleive she will get used to it. Basicaly she must do because its the only formula she tolerates.
For the vomiting. She also has reflux, bacause of her milk allergy that went untreated for three months due to doctor's ignorance ( thatsa looong storry).
And neocate is so thin it just flys out of her, lovely. And gaviscon is making her throug out even more. So we have to put in her 210ml bottle three scoops of rice cereal. And that helps the vomiting because it thickens it up a bit and i even think that it improves the taste too.
She doesnt have constipation on it. I read that it doesnt really coss a constipation but because body digest everything in the stomach there is very little waste and so baby wont poo as much, but shouldnt be constipated, you might think they are because they dont poo so often. Anyways thats what i read qnd might not be the case. But my isnt.
Just hope she will start to eat more soon,,or she will be skinny.

scamparoox2 · 21/08/2010 21:38

hi my youngest couldn't stomach neocate, gave him terrible tummy pains so after trying everything we were perscribed NutramigenAA, This is the futherest away from milk you can get apparently, worked a treat anyway. Not many health care/doctors really know much about it or they pretend not to as i believe it's quite expensive for them to perscribe.
