Is this a dairy allergy or intolerance? So what do we do now?

DD is 9mo. Until now I avoided all dairy and she is exclusively bf, as I had a suspicion she was reacting to dairy in my diet (we also have a family history of allergies). At the weekend I twice gave her a small amount of butter on toast for breakfast and about an hour later she was sick. I am worried this could be a dairy allergy or intolerance, so I've not given her any other dairy.

Is this reaction more likely to be an allergy or an intolerance? How can I tell?

Should I try her on any other form of dairy?

Will I get a hosptial referral if I go to the GP now?

If you have experienced this, how old was your dc when he/she grew out of it (assuming they did)?

Can you recommend any good sources of information about this?

Sorry for all the questions but if you have any experience and can provide any advice, I would be really grateful.

Thanks.

Sounds like she could do but an intolerance rather than an allergy. DS was sick on cows milk based formula, tummy ache and dodgy nappies, he is on soya formula and is much better and we have recrntly started including small amounts of goats milk with porridge (not fully weaned only 7 months, which has gone down OK. I have a friends daughter who has am intolerance and she is 15, I also have a friend whose son had an intolerance and is now fine. We will start slowly reintroducing when he is a year and see how we go. HTH but I am sure someone with more experience will come along.

He also has soya spread on toast.

Having gone through something similar myself, I know how frustrating and scary it can seem not knowing what is going on.

I would suggest trying some other form of dairy, in small amounts and seeing how your lo reacts. If there is vomiting, I would ask a gp for a referal to an allery clinic.

It may very well be an allergy or intolerance, but if there are no major tummy pains, dodgy nappies or hives, I would say give it another go, under close supervision of course, before going to the gp.

Please note I am not a doctor or a professional, just a mum who has being doing some research

Good luck.
