Advice needed about soya - and a possible infant milk allergy

My ds2 is 6 weeks old and has had some bowel problems. We have had some things ruled out, and I have been on a dairy free diet for the past 3 weeks as they think he may have a dairy allergy which he is getting through my breastmilk. I have been having soa milk as an alternative as well as some other soya products such as cheese. The last few days I have been very bloated and had terible wind. I wondered if it could be the soya milk as today all I have had is 2 soya milkshakes and 2 pieces of toast.

I googled on the internet and have found lots of people saying bad things about soya. Can anyone advise me please. I have bought rice milk to try to see if that helps with the bloating but now I'm worried about what these sites say about the hormone disruption they believe soya products can cause as presumably ds2 could be ingesting these through my breastmilk.

Babies who are allergic to dairy are often allergic to soya as well. Try cutting it out of your diet too. You need to be eating more than 2 slices of toast to get you through the day - try and get a balanced diet going - this could be contributing to your bloatedness.

Yes today was a bad day. I normally eat better than that. Have now had a baked potato and some chilli - that'll help with the bloated feeling!

I will stop drinking the soya milk and try the rice milk, but soya seems to be in nearly everything. Do you know if there is a bread that is dairy free and soya free as I haven't been able to find one. I do have a bread maker, but all my recipes involve milk powder.

my DD2 is on a dairy free diet at the moment, i make our own bread, with a panasonic breadmaker, but there is no milk in our recipes. Could you use rice milk ?

I make pancakes with rice milk & they come out fine.

You could also try rye bread & have a look at organic bread (tesco, asda etc) & the ingredients.

DD2 is allergic to dairy and I had to cut soya out while BF too.

It wasn't easy I basically couldn't have any tea/coffee/cereal etc. However I did lose 8lbs in a few weeks! Now put half of that back on!

Thank you for your replies. Thatsnotmymonster, how did you find out your daughter was allergic to dairy and soya. Was it just a case of cut it out and see or are that any definitive tests they can do? I have been told to have a dairy free diet as they are considering it as a possibility for ds's problems, but we are still waiting to see the gastroenterologist.

shortcircuit it is milk powder in my bread maker recipes so I'm not sure how to substitute that with rice milk. I wondered if there was such a thing as a dairy free milk powder. But I will check out organic breads.

I'm finding it quite easy to avoid dairy - as I'm not a great fan of it anyway, but I am amazed at how many products contain soya. However it has put me back on track with planning meals properly and increasing my cooking reportoire.

tutu- sorry have been busy all evening! Because I was BF it was just cut it out and see. When she was 12 weeks old she screamed for an entire week. I cut out dairy and she returned to being a normal baby

every time I had a slip up she got worse and when I started using soya regularly she got worse!

I stopped BF at 6mo and now she is on prescription formula and so content and happy.

What type of bowel problems? A friend has had her ds (FF) diagnosed as lactose intolerant. Paed did a PH test of his poo and it was really acidic. He was having explosive, smelly, greenish poo many, many times a day!

My DD is severely intolerant to dairy & soya and I have finally* with the help of MN found a bread she can eat.

Its bought in M&S and a small loaf costs about 80p. Its a wheat germ loaf and comes in a small size.

Keeps for ages too especially for toasting etc.

tutu100 · 19/01/2009 16:55

Will look for that in M&S.

They don't know quite what is wrong with my ds at the moment they are just trying to exclude things. He had a horrendously distended tummy which the dr sent us to the hospital for. They initially thought he had hrischsprungs disease but that has been ruled out. He was doing very tiny, incredibly smelly, pasty poos at that point. I thought that was ok, but when they x-rayed him they could see he was all backed up with poo so we had a week of enemas and then we got sent home with suppositories, but I haven't had to give him one for a week as he has been doing what i call normal bf baby poos - yellowy/orange quite runny with bits in. I don't know if this is because I'm on a dairy free diet, or whether it's just coincidence.

I am planning on bf for as long as possible so probably won't need to use formula, but obviously I want to definatly know if he has a dairy allergy for when I start to wean him.
