any advice appreciated!
my 5month od has eczema on his face and body, which i mananage with steroids. But he is always itching his head and forehead although its not red or that dry. GP gave me some shampoo which made it worse so only use plain water now with a bit of oilatum.
any ideas what could be making him itch and suggestions what i could use??

Only a practical suggestion.

When ds had excema as a baby, I used to put socks on his hands to stop him scratching his face too badly.

Hope someone else has useful suggestions re improving his itchiness.

what emollient cream are you using?

have they looked to see what they think might be causing the eczema?

my Ds has had the same problem. He would scratch his head so much at night, but would be fairly ok during the day. I did the following. Used a steriod cream on his scalp - advised by his specialist that it was ok to use on scalp. Cut down to washing his hair once a week with oilatum shampoo (gp can prescribe this) and would use hemp oil if his scalp felt dry. I used the steroid cream for about a week and that got rid on the dry/scaly bits and i have kept his hair short - no more than an inch or so long. Also i invested in some cotton comfort pjamas so that his hand were covered at night. Hope this helps

If he's itching the back of his head he might be allergic to the fabric in his buggy/carseat etc. I used to put a muslin square underneath (do they still make those things?)

yeh the back of his head and forehead is very itchy. Cut his hair very short and constantly massaging him with olive oil think its helping. I have also reduced bathing him to twice a week.

I don't have one, but some people swear by water softeners- the sort that add salt to your water. Might be worth a try.

nontoxic · 18/01/2009 23:01

And have you tried aqueous cream? When I'm sensitive it's the only thing I can use - and the emollients make me itch.

MegBusset · 18/01/2009 23:13

Could it be his hat or hood? DS is like this with any clothing that's not 100% cotton.

My son is 6 and a half months old and has a really itchy and really dry forehead since about 2 months old. GP prescribe a cream called DOUBLEBASE which is supposed to stop itching, and heal dry chapped skin, but it hasn't work for my son, you could try that cos i think it depends on your babys skin. avoid putting any lotion like johnsons because i think thats what cause my son to have an itchy head.If you do use anythink in his/her bath use only emollient oils or plain water would be best, i use INFACARE which doesnt irritate babies skin and make it soft. i've been searching on internet to see what can help my son's itchiness and i came across a cream called PROECZA which is supposed to be really good for eczema and itchy skin, you can order a sample packet for 1 dollar, ive just order it and thought ill try it to see if it works, copy this website and it will show you before and after of kids with bad eczema www.qbased.com/child-eczema/?gclid=CIaqyOGg1ZoCFQqenAod2X8L3w.
hope this has helped and if anyh=one has any other suggestions please let me know as it makes me sad seeing my boy scratch so much and so hard.
