Hello. I've just started using Neocate today and I'm wondering whether any experienced Neocate users know if it causes constipation just so I can be prepared. My DS has such bad eczema he scratches until he bleeds, he is 16 weeks old and the doctor has finally listened to me. Although had to pay for Neocate myself, and its £30 for a small tub, i can see this driving me into bankruptcy.

Anyway, if anyone has any expeirences with Neocate that they can share, good and bad, then please would you as I am wondering what to expect.

Also, does anyone know, should he take the same amount of Neocate as he would his usual formula?

hi, my dd has been on neocate nearly a year,
i havent found that its caused constipation at all, and as far as i know its not supposed to. also if you make it up according to the tin then it should be the same as any other formula in terms of the amount they need.
the main problem ive found is the taste of it (discusting stuff) but the younger you introduce it the better.
you should definately not have to pay for the tin, if the gp prescribed it then your little one should get it free! i would go back and get them to give it on prescription, if they wont then use this tin for a week or two and if the exema has improved then say its helped so you want it prescribed.

Hi macmac, no unwanted side effects from Neocate in our 18 months using it.

Neocate is only available on prescription, therefore you should not be paying for this! Please go back to GP once comfirmed there is an imprvement and ask for repeat prescription or referral to specialist who can provide you with this, bloody doctors! x

My DD is 11mths and has been on neocste for about 3 weeks.

You just make it up like you would a normal bottle. DD got on fine with it and I was all prepared for her to refuse because I have heard it tastes disgusting but she has adapted to it fine

It does smell awful too just to warn you.

And I have heard some cases where it can make a LOs poo go green (so don't worry if that happens!) although it didn't happen here...

£30 a small tin no wonder I had a battle to get it prescribed

You should definately get it free!!

My GP has told me she can't presribe it, we're on a waiting list to see a specliast but there are currently 'no appointments' and nooen seems to know when there will be appointments.
Had a real problem to get my LO to take the Neocate today, even mixed up with his normal formula. I wonder how long it will take him to get used to it. Am going to put up a posting about goats milk and see what people have to say.

Hiya I have been giving my 4 month old dairy allergic neocate for a week now, (pepti jr didnt help him) his allergy symptoms seem to have been relieved but he still gets the odd colic moment where he is in lots of discomfort, really windy and it smells rank . Does this settle down? or is this the best im gonna get?

Hello, just jumping on the back of this old thread, my DS is now 4 months and was diagnosed with a cows milk allergy at 2 months, we finally got him on Neocate 6 weeks ago after trying soya and Nutramigen, however ever since he's been on it he wakes up every hour at night after almost beginning to sleep through. i know wind is an initial side effect and wonder if this is the cause but it has been over 6 weeks now and i'm beginning to think he may be allergic to the Neocate. anyone have a similar experience?

My LOs poos did go a bit black and hard initially but according to the Neocate site this is quite common initially while the body gets used to is and it is a good sign actually (see www.neocate.co.uk/aaa_neocate/9923-faq.html). You may need to get it prescibed by a specialist first before you can get it one repeat from your doctor.. good luck
